It's not that it's un-usable, just that it's a pain in the butt to use, OCUK for example, want to look at random pics, just scroll through them in the pics thread, with reddit you have to click on individual threads and then click the content and rinse an repeat for every new image, it's completely ridiculous.

The big difference is that Reddit has a voting system, so where as OCUK each picture is posted in a thread in chronological order on Reddit the pictures are essentially ranked. Whatever is at the top of the list has been deemed most liked. Now you may not like that system and that's fair, just pointing that out.

They spent about an hour on 5live discussing various non news worthy stories on reddit the other day. Even had Victoria on the phone.

The quicker this website disappears the better!

Why? Its an incredibly good source for information and news of many things you may be interested in?

But it's a much wider issue than that. The mods aren't being supported as they were told they would be. There is obviously a disconnect between corporate and the community.

Perhaps. I'm not a mod so I wouldn't see that side of it. Seems that a lot of people were quick to jump on the bandwagon when I haven't seen any facts about it. To be honest I'm pretty ambivalent about it - /r/IamA never really appealed.

Reddit as it stands is fine for my uses.

I thought she was a mod but she was actually employed by reddit. In that case, i agree that it is a bit over the top. I think though people are just annoyed with the way reddit has lost the community feel that it once had.

Apparently the reason she was fired was because she did not censor the questions on the jesse jackson ama sufficiently enough.

There is zero evidence that it has anything to do with the Jesse Jackson AMA.

Reddit is brilliant tbh and the meltdown has long been needed. Woke up yesterday morning to get my grab of news only to find a heap of subs that I use set to private and everyone losing their minds over Victoria's dismissal.

I then realised I take the thing for granted so much that I hadn't realised who actually runs the behemoth of a site. Reddit is miles more easier to digest if you're using a mobile client on a tablet and there are subreddits (subforums if you will) to cater for every topic under the sun.

The whole AMA/Victoria case has been a shame as AMA's are one of the biggest traffic sources for the site and there have been so many memorable ones in the past.

Not sure why so many struggle with how reddit works. Its just content that is voted up and down in its most basic form. Bit more info here:

how reddit works

redditors vote on which stories and discussions are important. the hottest stories rise to the top, while cooler stories sink.

comments can be posted on every story on reddit. comments add information, context, and humor.

anyone can create a community (called "subreddits"). each subreddit is independent and moderated by a team of volunteers.

reddit is open source. community members are constantly tinkering and contributing features, bug fixes, and translations back to the site.

Not that hard to comprehend :p There are some great subreddits out there.

Just keep telling your self that then.

Sister's puppy experiencing air conditioning for the first time.

Sure, you can sign up and remove items or whatever but you can't blame people for thinking that the site if full of crap when the above is the first thing you see as a new visitor.

Imagine GD was the first sub people saw when they signed up to this forum. They wouldn't know if they were on the Daily Mail or EDL website.

Interesting a post from GallowBoob was in your feed straight away as a new user.

One problem with Reddit is how to deal with people submitting links multiple times combined with the perfect caption or comment to gain karma/likes/internet points.

GallowBoob has become a master of this over the last few months submitting a combination of reposts (duplicate content) and OC (original content). There's some speculation as to whether it's a single person or a group of people who has figured out how to game the system/hive mind of reddit for personal gain by occasionally slipping in a few product placement posts, potentially paid for by companies.

I do agree the default subs leave a lot to be desired at first glance. However part of the reason they become the way they are is a by-product of being a default sub, their growth is exponentially faster than the smaller subs. This makes it much more difficult for the moderators to moderate them effectively.

It's why they occasionally mix it up and remove default subs from time to time if they seem to lose their way as they grow too large, and add up and coming popular ones to the default list for newly registered users.

I guess this all comes back to a large part of the reason for this recent uprising. Mods aren't being provided with the tools they needed to run the larger subs effectively. Victoria was one of those tools and vital for the smooth operation of Ask Me Anything interviews across multiple subs, and one of the only direct, reliable lines of communication with the admin team. I can understand why many of them are dissatisfied with the way it was handled.

I imagine it will spur a big push on the admins pouring resources into further developing the advanced moderating features and trying to incorporate features from 3rd party tools into the core. At least that's what they should be doing in order to keep the mods happy. Without good mods curating the content the site is worthless.

Reposts / OC and gaming of the system was one of the biggest problems that Digg faced too. It is one of the major things users felt Digg v4 failed at, allowing "power users" (was it babyman on digg? I can't remember if he was a Digg or Reddit power user) to take over the front pages.

/r/technology was one of the biggest default subs I remember them removing from the default options due to mods there removing posts and content as well as arguing about who should and should not be on the mod list.
