Is a 980ti really overkill for 1080p

a lot of games get maxed out at 120fps @ 1080 for me with the gpu at like 50% usage so it barely gets above 55c lol

don't forget nvidia has DSR
you can game at 4k res downsampled by the gpu to 1920x1080

My max res is 1920x1080
My max hz is 144

I have one, but I'm running 1080p@120Hz.

GTAV with the advanced options turned up I average around 60-90fps depending on the area and what's going on, so there's a fair amount of wiggle room. I wouldn't consider buying a 980Ti a waste for 1080p.

It really depends what you want. I always go for flagship cards because they last longer before needing to be upgraded. You pay more up front but don't need to upgrade as soon :)

Exactly, 60-90 is barely overkill.

I've seen a few mention they're going Tri-SLI Titan X/980Ti for 1440p, I personally think that's a bit overkill but each to their own. I've got a 1080p monitor/tv but use Ultra HD DSR regularly and love it.

When you play games at 1080P on a Fury X like GTA V and you can't get playable frames, even when you haven't maxed out the settings, a 980Ti certainly isn't overkill :D

Not at all. In fact late next year i bet it will struggle in some of the latest games at 1080p with everything on.

I use a 980ti for 1080p, I was going to get a 980 to save some cash as I thought what's the point of having games running at more than 100fps on a 60hz screen but it turns out that with games like GTA V if you max out the graphics options you with be lucky to keep your frames above 60fps so I'm happy I paid the extra for the ti.
