Read this and you may never want to eat a ready meal again!

I don't really eat the microwaveable ready meals but I wish people would stop relating them to poverty. Yes the majority are cheap and pretty bad but there are some finest range ready meals that are average but certianly not the toxic sludge these books portray them as.

Also what is a "ready meal" as defined by these books as to be fair you can get some meals of good quality that are just pop in the oven from the butchers.

Is it really that bad that we eat everything from the carcasses, like our ancestors few hundred years ago living on poverty line as peasants on rented farms?

Back in the day every single bit of butchered animals was eaten that was possible to be eaten. Just like today.

Now ofc processing with chemicals etc. is nasty, but we'd need much more cattle to produce same quantity of "quality meat" if we'd stop using all the bits and pieces that we do now.

Personally I try to avoid ready made meals, but who knows what my lunch restaurant uses at work...

If all of our food would be produced by organic farming methods, we'd have hard time supporting 7+ billion people on this planet. Or at least the meat consumption per capita would need to go down by a lot, which doesn't seem likely as in meat consumption in developing countries is just following the increases in incomes.

This to be honest. For work sometimes I have no choice but to have a ready meal really. I would almost never have one if I am at home for dinner but sometimes I don't have a choice if I want a reasonable hot meal, so a microwave meal it is. I never buy the value/super cheap ones though as the ingredients and actual food content in them is awful.

Some of the nicer "premium" ready meals are really not that bad.

Besides, I bet half the people scoffing at ready meals poison themselves with cigarettes and alcohol on a daily basis so *shrugs*

Remember the story that outraged people that they were so offended seeing pigs heads displayed in the butchers stall/window.

Exactly, it's like people who are vegetarians for animal welfare who also wear leather and fur. It's a tad hypocritical.

they could produce a book like that for almost anything that is provided on a large scale even the quality foods that are mass produced will have little secrets let alone the packaging that these quality ingredients come in.

I try to eat well but when im at work i tend to grab a ready meal and its rare i pay over £1 for one as when im at work im there to earn money not spend it and its purely to fend off hunger not to enjoy a quality sitdown meal.

we're not talking about the people with balanced diet though, its the people who solely eat frozen foods because they cant afford or simply cba to cook their own meals.

but you can have a perfectly balanced diet from frozen food...

Glad i can say i have never bought and never will buy a ready meal, l do my best to eat organic food i thank my parents for brining me up this way. .

you know organic farming still sues heavy metals for herbicides/pesticides unlike normal farming...

For some reason people seem to immediatley assoiciate frozen food with aditives. While I know that some may contain additives lets not forget that frozen food does cover fruit/veg frozen at the source with no additives at all.

As for eating organic we have yet to see a study with conclusive proof to suggest organic farming is better for us/poses less health risks

I must admit I'm pretty partial to the odd Rustlers cheeseburger! Although I do prefer to put my own cheddar cheese & Ketchup or Chilli sauce on them.

I don't know how anyone can eat these ready meals or cheap burgers, chicken nuggets etc. Every time I have something like that i will get a bit of bone or gristle in it, without fail. I might just be more squeamish than most people, but I have to leave whatever i am eating as it makes me feel sick just thinking about it.

The food in Britain is proobably the worst i have ever encountered across Europe, during my stay there for 4 years i have came to the conclusion you people have the worst food habits, i was wondering every single time what were these mothers thinking when they were giving their kids frozen pizzas, cooked in microwave ovens?

madness...i happen to produce olive oil for my family needs, the olive oil in the shelves was like water and tasteless, i gave a friend of mine to taste our olives and olive oil and it was like a revelation to him, i was glad i helped him to turn his back on cheap unhealthy food.

Jamie oliver also did very good job.

Couldn't agree more my father always brings back a load of olive oil from morocco so much better than what you can get on supermarket here. I also found the fruit & vegetables much better when i was traveling abroad i don't why we get the bad stuff is it regulations or GM food?

I'll join in the moaning the day I can't get fresh fruit, vegetables and meat or unprepared frozen of the same anywhere in Britain.

Otherwise you're just removing the urine.

Anyone would think other European countries didn't sell convenience food or have people with poor eating habits.

Go look in any large supermarket, what do you think happens to the fresh produce which is stacked up in ~1/5 of the store space.

Great way to tarnish 64 million people with the same brush, what nonsense.

I guess some of us are not so lucky to be Greek

Yeah the supermarkets are rubbish in the UK they don't stock enough fresh food

It's like the mini USA with our diet when eating healthy costs more

Thanks op, I have added that to my audible wish list for when I next grab a book. One I read recently....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Salt-Sugar-...qid=1436729450&sr=1-1&keywords=salt+sugar+fat

^ A fantastic book on the history of some of the largest food companies in the world and how they have changed over the years shovelling in more Salt, fat and sugar. One of the best books I have read in a long while with a mass of reference material and research notes/data at the back.

Plenty of street markets with fresh fruit and veg which is cheaper than supermarkets too, especially in London.. New Covent Garden market probably one of the biggest.

i have just posted my experience mate, ofcourse i didnt say all of you eat poorly. I have seen though a large portion of the population buying ready to eat cakes and stuff like this, still remember those cheap tarts that looked like plastic :p

anyway it wasnt my intention to insult you just point that bad habits with a bit of effort can be improved. And the greek comment is irrelevant, i am sure grandmas cook awesome foods in britain, just the younger generation seems reckless
