I wonder if it's worth upgrading from a 7990 to one of the newer cards yet? I would like to return to a single gpu, preferably nvidia. Would the 980 ti be a worthwhile upgrade?

Will be a nice upgrade yes. Recently moved from 780 sli to a single 980ti. Games are smoother, and an awful lot less noise and heat.

Apart from not having to mess about with crossfire profiles all the time.
Farcry 4 for me was a joke, an update came out that not only didn't have a profile, it stopped all manual ways of forcing it on as well!

Dont do any upgrade, there is no point to do it unless you are trying to play at 1440p/4k.
Bette to wait for next gen, then do a big upgrade (new freesync monitor + new 16nm card)
Going from 28nm to 16nm + HBM 2 can easily achieve a 50-100% upgrade.

Been mulling the same issue over for a few weeks now, except i dont mind two gpu's. loved my 7990 i can only really see the 295x2 as a worthy successor. But so so so tempted by a 980ti. Saying that gtav nearly maxed out so is there really any point upgrading?!

damn the 7990 still holding well cant even remotely justify the cost looking at those benchmarks

This. The 7990 is a beast and if I didnt have to RMA mine during the mining craze I would have been able to get a direct replacement instead of them being all out of stock..

Im still in awe that mine cost £325 from ocuk during a crazy sale, id get £200 for it used. That was a awesome buy! Sorry you didnt get that kind of luck.

I'm on a watercooled 7990 and the only thing currently worth a look is the 980TI but it the price is far too high to justify the change to my mind. Going to wait it out.

Also, how much do you reckon I could get for my 7990? I don't have enough posts for the marketplace, so it would have to go on ebay.

Recently I have been doing some research on this as well, somewhere between £150-£200 on the bay.

Also have you played Witcher 3 at 1440p? If so what fps / setting / any micro suttering?
I get micro sutter (only 30% gpu usage) when I use 1440p VSR on my 1080p monitor during combat (especially when I use the fire magic...)

I don't have Witcher 3 for PC, sorry. I'm really only playing FF14 atm, which means buying a new gpu would be a waste of money but I'm feeling that itch again.

I keep thinking about upgrading my 7970 to something new, but aside from the usual thoughts of going for a 980 / 980ti / 390X, I am tempted to just drop another 7970 in. Mind you, I'd need a new psu.

If xfire works, ie good profile support thats not a bad shout mate. But there is the increased power draw, heat that you get from multi gpu with each vendor. Ive used a few sli setups over the years, and ill be the first to admit that it is never perfect. But i gotta say, since moving to a single 980ti from sli 780. The games im playing do run smoother, much lower noise and a card that runs cooler also helps to keep my cpu temps down a bit. Very good as tbh, an overclocked 4790k runs pretty toasty.
