Was Avatar good/bad?

Star Wars was not released as a standalone so you can't really judge the first film without considering the other two parts.

Lucas himself said in different interviews over the years he never expected the success and to ever make sequels. Episode IV wasn't on the original release scrolling text at the beginning and was only added to later re-releases.

It was bad. Cameron predicted it would revolutionise cinema. It didn't.

Mad Max: Fury Road is the movie Avatar desperately wanted to be.

To be fair, it was a huge springboard for the rise of 3D in recent years. There were a bunch of 3D films before it but not to this scale.

My memory of seeing it at the cinema was something like "wowomgwtfamazbeballFX"...3D is gonna be amazing.

So far I can think of about 3 films off the top of my head that did 3D perfectly, Avatar, Prometheus and Dredd.

I'm done with 3D, only saw Jurassic World in 3D because 2D was sold out. It was enjoyable but nothing to go out of my way for.

Enjoyed it and the effects were very good but then we did see it in 3D at the BFI IMAX. For that visual experience I'd give it 8/10.

It was neither particularly good or bad, just ok.

If I had to class as one or other; I'd go with good. I've definitely seen a lot worse and it was better than I'd been expecting.

I watched this at an iMax in 3D. I have to say the 3D effects was simply amazing. Still to this date the best use of 3D I have ever seen. I did enjoy watching it. But I can't say I enjoyed the story/movie to much if that makes sense :p

I rarely bother with 3D now a days if I'm honest. But Avatar still stands out for me as an "experience". I wouldn't watch the movie again now though once was enough :p

The film was ok, story wasn't perfect, I did enjoy it still... must have done something right as it is highest grossing film of all time $2,787,965,087, with Titanic at $2,186,772,302 which was released in 1997.

I am thinking the new Star Wars will break Avatar though...

...Also it was a tad irritating at the time that it forced the Avatar the last airbender movie (I like the series) to change it's name to just the last airbender.... but in hindsight that was a good thing because that's a seriously bad movie and doesn't deserve to be associated with the series lol

+1

That Airbender movie was such a disappointment. Which was a pity because the CGI and sets were ok.

Was chatting with a few friends last night about films that should have been bad but had their fates changed, we basically came to the conclusion that the "taken" films were rubbish ideas saved by Liam Neeson (they have Stephen Segal DVD bin written all over them) and that Avatar was a bad script with bad acting that was only saved by amazing effects, one guy however maintained that the film was amazing in it's own right and will stand the test of time like Star Wars (we all laughed at him).

I am now wondering however who is right, the was a lot of negativity on the internet when it launched but how do people feel now?

My opinion has always been that it was basically a pocahontas ripoff with blue aliens instead of Indians and that the acting was subpar and the story was dire, the only difference between it and a straight to DVD disaster was the AMAZING effects which served as an exhibition/benchmark of the new 3D technology, but this will not hold true forever and it will end up like The Lawnmower man (only good thing was the effects which now look dated).

I can't remember the last time I heard anyone say "I watched Avatar again last night, it's still awesome", probably because nobody says "I know what I'll rewatch Avatar tonight" in the first place. People will freely re-watch the LOTR films, Terminator 2, and all sorts of classics but nobody really rewatches Avatar because it's a showoff film with no substance, once you have seen the effects you have seen the effects and that's all the film ever had going for it, just like Lawnmower man and many others.

You won't like this answer but really who cares?

If your mate likes it then good for him. If you don't then good for you.

Films and TV are subjective.

Avatar was my first experience of 3d, so for that reason I thought it was good from a visual view point. But strip the 3d away, and it becomes very average. I have tried to recapture my first experience of the film at home, but even with a great 3d TV the novelty of the 3d visuals has steadily waned for me - I don't even try to watch it anymore. It's a very gimmicky film.

I like re watching it. my fav bit is the start coming out of sleep arriving at the planet and then the shuttle on approach. I just like the movie. I also had a habit of re watching movies in general.

Can't say, I've never watched it & have no plans on doing so (I've watched clips though) This film IMO (& Titanic) is as bad as Terminator & Aliens is as good.

Seen it, meh. A crossover of ferngully \ dances with wolves. Apparently the trend of putting a hole in your ear and putting in a piece of plastic to make it wider for some unknown reason has reached the blue cat people from space as well.

I didn't think the cg was that special either, literally a load of generic blue bodies with some facial characteristics from the actors slapped onto them. Didn't get the hype then, still don't now.

Neither; it was profoundly average. The acting was OK, the direction was good, but the plot was a string of clichés (not just from Dances With Wolves, but common to many films - anything involving "going native") and the script was laughable. And as with any Cameron film where Cameron had a major part in the script writing, it gave the impression of having been written at the bottom of a treacle well.

As is so often the case with Science Fiction films, there was a far more adult and interesting film struggling to get out and failing.
