OK so I said I would never return to Nvidia, but man, AMD have made this choice almost impossible.

I want a Fury X. However, I don't want to wait any longer. I bought a new rig and now I feel it's time for new GPUs. Thing is, try finding a Fury X. There's no lead time and no solid date for any stock.

So I'm slowly but firmly being pushed back to team green (well, I already am but..).

So. I have a few last things I need to check. Please answer these based on facts, as it's very important !

Does the 980ti use any more power than the Titan Black? I currently run a 850w PSU I really don't want to change it (my goal is two 980tis, btw). Don't worry too much, Titan Blacks are fine. I also don't plan to overclock, hence SLI.

Is one 980ti really as quick or quicker than two 780ti/Titan Black? because in benchmarks it's a good 20% faster than my two Superclock bios TBs can manage.

Does any one here have one 980ti running 4k? how is the gaming experience? is the card powerful enough? or do I definitely need two?

If I go with one card it will be something bloody special. I'm eying up the 8 pack or the EVGA Classy.

When is the Lightning coming? any one know?

So yeah, that ought to about do it. I have T minus 6 days until I get paid, but that could be a moot point given the 8 pack isn't in 'til the 3rd of August.

I just feel that £75 extra over the basic card gets you so much more.

Oh god, I hate you Nvidia you green bar stewards..... /spits on the ground.

Not sure I agree with you there dude.

Call it £500 for the reference (there are a few at that price).

That's 15% more for the special offer of the HOF card, is it really 15% better? And if you don't buy it during the offer and pay £650 or whatever they are.. Surely that's an even more extreme gap.

/thoughts.

Aren't the default GPU clocks about 200MHz (~20%) higher than stock though?
Plus you get a cooler and quieter card (I think). So if 15% higher cosat gets 20% higher performance plus those, then it does seem good.
Not sure how the overclocking differs.

Andy, have you considered the 390Xs if you don't wanna go Nvidia? 8GB should be good for 4K.

You're probably right about the clock I'm not sure.

For what it's worth in that video's comparison the G1 gets NEARLY a 10% lead (55fps vs 50fps) in GTA V. And everything else there is a couple of FPS in it. Strange because as you say it has pretty much 20% extra clock speed, you'd expect 20% extra performance?

I think the Zotac Amp for 509 quid is the one to get, Good cooler plus a 5 year warranty.

EDIT:
If you don't want to manually overclock get the Zotac Amp extreme it's got the highest stock clock and a 5 year warranty.

I'm already running Titan Blacks, so no not really dude. I want away from two cards if I can. Wolfenstein : The old blood does not support any sort of multiple GPU, and I'm gutted because I absolutely loved the original @ 1080p.

But this one is a mess at 4k because one card isn't enough. I'm getting low 30s.

Yeah, basically, at the offer price of 575, considering this is a similar card to the likes of the classified/kingpin/lightning, its a bargain

I was running three titans and admittedly three card scaling wasn't great, but I am getting about the same in games as I was

A 980ti wont use more than 300W even with a pretty savage OC and when you get two you wont be needing to OC them right to the wall anyway, around stock clocks they use less than 250W

Yep it was the Zotac 5 year warranty that swayed me too.

Although I went for the reference design as I prefer that style of cooler and I can't see the performance being noticably different anyway (for better or worse).

I'm coming from an R9 290 so it should be a decent jump anywho!

Get a standard Fury?? They are very close to the Fury X IIRC.

Problem is power supply. Then I have to buy a new one or try and fit this gargantuan Revolution I have. There's no way I will get away with two Furys on this PSU I don't think.

Emm,the power consumption should be fine:

TPU is for the card only.

Some at the wall numbers for an entire system:

Edit!!

NV does have the edge, but the power consumption characteristics of the Fury are better than the R9 290 cards.

This, agree entirely and I am also being pulled to the dark side and I hate it but I blame Amd and their continued incompetence of late. 19th of July and still no stock of FuryX anywhere, at reasonable prices that is, both Fury cards are overpriced anyway.

It's halfway between a GTX980 and GTX980TI and priced as such. The GTX980 Strix and Fury Strix are within £20 of each other on most retailers, and its a faster card which has just been launched.

In fact on some retailers they cost EXACTLY the same.

The R9 Fury X actually is less than 10% faster than either of the Fury cards and in the case of the Asus, has WORSE performance/watt:

http://tpucdn.com/reviews/ASUS/R9_Fury_Strix/images/perfwatt_3840.gif

Its actually the most efficient desktop AMD card ATM.

Edit!!

The equivalent GTX980TI Strix is a faster card, but you might not want to look how much that costs either...!

The £510 non-reference GTX980TI cards are faster, but if ALXAndy is considering the Fury X,the Fury is actually an alternative unless you have a compact case.

Can't go with Fury Cat. Open cooler = nightmare for CFX. That's why if I go with the HOF 8 pack I will probably stick to one card.

It's tough. If I get one card in games that support SLI I will gain nothing, and I really don't want to spend £500 on a side grade. I'm beginning to think maybe I should just leave things as they are. I mean, at least it mostly works.

The one game I want to play is Fallout 4, and that won't require anything more than I have now.

I dunno man, getting remorse again :S It's probably a good thing I don't have the money now, I'd only end up buying something and regretting it.

Good to see Fury actually uses less power than my TBs though.

So, if I did want to buy an Amd 'latest' card right now then its the Sapphire Fury Tri X, the only one in stock..........dire is the word that comes to mind. :(

Dude,if its FO4,seriously just hold onto your money - heck a single GTX970 or R9 390 would probably be enough for it if you really want to upgrade.

Heck, even probably a single Titan Black.

I am going to play it soon to launch if I can,and I will be rocking far less graphics horsepower than you as I cannot push myself to spend much more than £200ish on a card myself.

Since you would prefer one card, IMO the best option is the fastest at a reasonable price which is 980ti or FuryX . You have said your goal is 2 cards (my goal is two 980tis, btw), So i'd but cards with a good cooler But at a realistic price hence classy's if over priced arent worth it since you dont overclock IMO.
Either Vendor would do its a case of what you can get stock of and that u can return for another easy if it has coil whine/ pump noise
