Howdy,

my girlfriends 2900XT in her pc went pop, so I had to put one of my 7950's in her pc.
Now im running at half the performance of before ofc, but also this gpu in my pc sometimes the screen flickers, talking like once every few hours, but it runs fine but its on its way out.

I was waiting on a fury X, but meh prices way too steep for what it is..

So, been looking at 2nd hand 290X's cant really find anything eye catching till I thought, well..

How would a 270 quid msi gaming 390 (non X) perform compaired to a 290X, does anyone know? cant find any benchmarks to compare the two.

I like the look of the msi gaming one, big fans, big heat sink, looks the ****.

And is it worth the price? or would a 290X still be the way to go? the thing with the 390 is its 8gb also which is better.

Also, another thing when buying a new graphics card now a days, (its been a while since I have, since the 7950 came out), how do you know if its going to be elpida or Hynix memory? or is it just pot luck?

Cheers

do it Ice. Like you, was looking to upgrade the 7950 crossfire with the Fury/ Fury X when it arrived, but being very underwhelming, I decided to get something else cheaper, and wait till next year when the proper upgrade comes along.

So decided on a couple of MSI 390's to hook up with my Freesync monitor. Without sound to crazy excited, they are blooming amazing cards.

But then again for 70 quid more, a 390X, whats the performance difference between the two? is it really a lot or not that much? :p

Is the performance difference worth 70 quid?

I can't really comment on the extra £70 for the 390X as I got my MSI 390X for £275~ through a supplier at work.

But going from a 7870 Black Edition to the 390X, its a very fast card :D

If your going for 1 card, then maybe, you wont see much difference in gaming. But if you opt for crossfire again, just get the 390 and then another later on. They are proper sexy :)

There is a 290X TRI-X OC on the Members Market which has one of the highest regarded coolers of the 290X series (It's the best I believe) going for £150 delivered bought Last August with a years warranty left.

I know what I would do :D

And to think I just paid £315 for my 290X Lightning :P

Although with the overclocking i've got from it, i'd say it's worth it.

that does look tempting, I just don't like the tri-x's :/ but for that price its very tempting.

But for 270 quid could get a brand new 390, 8gb, 3 years warrenty hmmm

Yeah ugly card in my opinion but it would be a bargain buy. Suppose the warrenty is a slight put off but I guess you pay for these things by going new.

Just wanted to point out the offer, no doubt it'll be gone by this evening I would imagine.

I just upgraded my SLI 580's to a single r9 390. Its reallly good. Just messing around with some overclocks mines easily hit 1170 mhz and i've not really pushed it much. The result below was from a 1150 clock with memory slightly overclocked as well.

edit: mistakes :(

The major off putting thing about a 390.

Is that I score 12k with spec in cig, granted I only got one 7950 now cause my missus has the other.

But 270 pounds to have less performance than I did before :(

I keep forgetting the fact that, one gpu, quieter. cooler, less power etc. and I can get a cheap one later on in time for crossfire again.

But meh I don't know, bit put off now iv seen a firestrike score of overall performance of a 390 :p and a 290x is slower. so meh, now im stuck again.

If it's the one I think your looking at its a 290 not a 290X.

True, but the graphics score was actually 13k, its my CPU holding back to overall score. Not that it matters much. I'm able to play games on basically ultra at 1080p and for the majority of the time 60fps. I've read this card is actually better at higher res but can't test myself.

Does running dual monitors affect performance much? In any case this score is better than my sli 580's so I'm happy and woud recommend on my experience.

Hmm my graphics score is 16k if I remember correctly will find the link once I'm online again just on my phone at moment

And ok cheers :)

Edit here is my score http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/4625155

17k graphics score, so a 390 is a fair bit slower than where I was before with my cheap and cheerful second hand 7950s. Well one of them was. One was bought from new
