4 week break: South Korea or Japan?

Always considered Japan cooler than Korea.

I've been to Korea a couple of times and I would never go there purposefully for a month just for a holiday.

At the very least do 2 weeks Korea and 2 weeks Japan

Rhyl ofc. 4 weeks should be just enough to experience all the wonders it has to offer.

Why would you EVER want to willingly go to Rhyl, why people see it as somewhere nice to go on holiday I will never know.

I'm quite happy here in the quiet and peaceful Conwy Valley :)

Do both. If you go to Korea don't just go to Seoul. Go to Gyeongju. I've walked around temples and castles there without even seeing another person. Truly untouched. I thought Korea had more culture than Japan. Kyoto is nice in Japan.

SK will be pretty cold in Feb. I was in North Kore in Feb and it got down to -25c in Pyongyang.

I'm actually going to Sk and Japan for 10 days each in March/April. I'd stick to Japan in Feb though as the weather is more forgiving. If you are worried about money just spend some time away from the cities in Japan. I'm going to be trying to do Japan on about £10 a day all in which looks pretty doable.

I should add that it adds nothing to the flight to include Japan and Korea together. Have a look at setting up a chain of flights if you want to do both.

I thought about doing 2 weeks in South Korea and 2 weeks in Japan. My fear is 2 weeks won't give either country the justice it deserves.

It won't but neither will 4 weeks - so you'll be going back if you like it whether you take 2 weeks or 4.

I'd go for a fortnight in both then more time in the future in the one I liked best. They are close enough that this is a great opportunity for a very unique trip.

I found for Japan a budget similar to other major cities like London, New York is about right. Seoul is a little cheaper but this becoming less so as the Won appreciates.

Personally I could easily spend four weeks in Japan (I'm going back for three weeks again next April anyway) but given the OP's choices I agree with [TW]Fox suggestion of doing both.

You can fly from Seoul to Fukuoka (in the south of Japan) in 1hr 20m and Fukuoka is on the bullet train network (Hakata station) so you can go directly from there to Osaka and then on to Tokyo. So you could start off in Fukuoka and then work your way up to Tokyo via Hiroshima, Osaka and Kyoto.

Personally I would split it 1 week in Korea and 3 in Japan ... but it really depends on what your interests are in both places.

Oh and it's not particularly expensive in Japan (cheaper to eat there than in Nottingham normally) and I can't say I've had any language issues.

I've given it a lot of careful consideration and I think J-Pop wins this one.
I'd be a bit careful as your J-Pop picture is misnamed as that is SDN48 (who disbanded in 2012) not AKB48 as the filename would imply.

memyselfandi has got it pretty spot on I think in terms of time frames. I personally would spend the whole time in Japan, but if you're interested in both, one week in South Korea would be a good balance.

Whilst I recommend Hiroshima, Kyoto and Tokyo I would personally skip Osaka. Maybe spend some more time in Kyushu? Lots of great little towns between Fukuoka and Beppu.

Like others have said, if you can do both, do both. I'd love to visit SK though, but I really like K-Pop and especially a certain someone in a certain K-Pop band and watch K-Drama :D I'd also love to visit Japan though at some point.

Do both and you can experience the wonders of both. 2 weeks is plenty of time.

You want to witness oppression, modern dictatorship and state propaganda in person?

In a sense, yes.

I am under no illusion that the DPRK is a socialist paradise. (The is, and never has been, and never will be, any such thing! (No matter how much the Guardienistas want it to be))

But I would like to see what it is actually like (even with the, no doubt, carefully choreographed tourist experience)

Despite the (alleged) horrors of the DPRK, There is a part of me that would hate to see a world so sanitised that places like the DPRK can no longer exist!
