At a petrol station, what is to stop someone nutcase pointing the pump nozzle in the air, squeezing the trigger and lighting the stream of petrol effectively turning it into a flamethrower?

most peoples desire not to burn to death?

although recently i did see a bloke get out of his car open the cap get the hose then turn the hose on when it was still by his side before he put it in the car, soaking the floor all the side of his car with diesel and just standing there topping up as if that was totally normal.

must have put a good liter or two of the stuff over the floor/car.

Lack of suicidal tendencies and the fact fact that the fuel flow rate isn't much higher than pouring water of of a large watering can.

I thought this, but then I thought what if you put a nozzle with a small orifice over the existing nozzle? Like when you put your thumb over the nozzle of a hose to make a smaller but higher velocity stream.

But I've just remembered that petrol pump nozzles have a cut-off when the pressure gets too high, like when you fill your tank and the fuel goes back into the nozzle??

I think I have answered my own question. I can now use petrol stations safe in the knowledge that I can't be assassinated by other pump users... Unless of course they just walk up to me with the hose and spray me point blank

Hey OP do you find a slight delay on the line now when you ring people and a few extra ms latency on the internet......

:D

^^ Won't notice any extra ms latency if your on most of the mainstream ISPs ;)

Think you might find it harder to turn the pump nozzle into a flamethrower than you think both from ignition and flow rate perspectives.
