Windows 10

So not only have I had my keyboard and mouse randomly disconnecting, the Xbox App now crashes when it starts up!

What is going on?? :(

EDIT: And now since updating my BIOS Windows 10 is no longer activated. Lol what a waste of time.

Presumably because your key is in the UEFI bios, so deactivating would have happened on your 8.1 install too.

Absolute waste of time, I've reinstalled the OS like 10 times. Finally had everything sorted after updates, bitlocker encryption taking ages etc. Now because I do a BIOS update it's deactivated my install and speaking to Microsoft I have to go back to Windows 7 and do it all again.

I am so mad.

I agree with you. It is such a pain. Why Microsoft cannot come up with an easier and a hassle free upgrade to a new OS is beyond me! I am sure it would be easy for them to make it easier for Joe Bloggs to upgrade his OS.

Ok, its free! But they should still make the process easier. I know that there are a lot of different variables when it comes to hardware but a big company like MS could surely make it a simpler process.

Yeh I know right! I always thought it was based off of a change of motherboard. Not a BIOS that people upgrade when improvements come out.

So it's impossible to upgrade your BIOS without deactivating Windows? If you do this outside of the year you will have to pay as well!

I've left my computer on for a day and half doing bitlocker encryption. What an absolute waste of time!

Well, my PC had its first crash since i put Win 10 on! When it automatically restarted it said no boot device found! So, i just manually restarted it and all was ok!! Ruddy MS!

I don't see how they could have made it any simpler than the "click here to get Windows 10" method they have used?

I'm pretty certain that updating the BIOS won't invalidate your install. So you have either done something wrong or simply not bothered to try and reactivate it. Do you have access to the Key stored in your BIOS? Have you tried simply re-entering that?

How would I enter the key in the BIOS?

And yes I have bothered to attempt and had Microsoft remote desktop in as well. So yes by the looks of things a BIOS upgrade does invalidate it or at least mine did.

Sorry, I didn't mean enter the key into the BIOS, I meant read it and then try entering it into the Windows 10 install.

Does your machine give you the ability to Activate by Phone? Try that (its a robot, not a person, they tend to be more helpful :p).

Thanks but I don't think that will work as the only way to activate windows 10 is upgrading from an activated 7/8 isn't it? You can't use your 7 product key to get Windows 10 to activate I don't believe.

You can call them and it will work. Confirmed multiple times.

So basically, your Win10 is free forever, you just need to go through some extra legwork to re enable it once you upgrade hardware. Can't moan for free.

What number do I call them on please? I've just spoken with the tech support and they couldn't do anything.

Once you have upgraded you can then clean install 10 and Activate it, providing you signed in with an MSA.

If your PC gives you the option to Activate by phone, at least try it. The number will be in the Activate by Phone part in System, as it gives you a unique code you need to enter too (not your key).

I don't have the option to activate by phone at the moment and I don't use a Microsoft Account.

Well your lack of MSA will be why its not activating.

What does your PC say in System? You should have an Activate Now link and then when it fails it will give you the ability to Activate by Phone. And if not, disable Internet and click Activate Now and it should jump straight to a Phone option.

I can't see that it will because it's not like it hasn't been activated in the past.

This is what it says:

It actually says it's blocked.

Hrrrmm..

Thinking about it I doubt the key will ever work being directly entered into there as its a 7 key not a 10 one. I think everyone who upgrades is getting given the same 10 key aren't they?

You dont get a 10 key. Its all just tied to the activation servers and hardware :(
