Motorola Moto G - new budget smartphone champion?

Do you you the Moto G version X.x
Or the actual Moto X

They claim the Moto X 2014 is water resistant on the spec sheet, all it means is it's as water resistant as every other phone made in the last few years in that it won't blow up if you get it a little damp not that you can go taking in the bath.

"as every other phone" is a bit misleading.

There is water resistant coating which is sprayed on the outside and inside. Really just rain and splash proof. But its not water proof as some phones are like the Moto Defy IP67 certified - dust tight and water proof (up to 1m for 30 mins), M4 Aqua IP68 certified - dust and water proof up to 1.5 meter and 30 minutes.

That's my point on the spec sheet they claim water resistance, if you do a bit more reading it's only got the hydrophobic coating which pretty much every other recent phone also has or else they'd be dying left right and center if you took them out in the rain.
This is the actual 2nd gen Moto X.

Motorola's are supposed to have the PCB and internals coated to help prevent moisture damage. This doesn't make them waterproof but probably helps resist splashes.

That said, I was stood on a bank of a beck in flood the other winter and the bank collapsed and dropped me over waist deep into the water. Once over the initial shock of the freezing cold water and everyone laughing at my downfall I remembered my Moto X was still in my pocket. Pulled it out somewhat too late and expected the worse. All was fine and never missed a beat. This was the original Moto X. It was submerged in my trouser pocket for maybe 10 secs or so whilst I scrambled out of the water  I was maybe just lucky and don't recommend giving the Moto's a dunk. No case on the phone btw and no water seemed to come out of the internals once the outside had been dried off. No steaming under the glass either.

Think my first gen has just died. Won't turn on even while plugged in to a charger. Perhaps time for a new phone!

I'm not sure your right on that. I think a lot of phones even recent ones don't have any hydrophobic coating or water protection at all.

Most moto phones have a coating including Moto X & Nexus 6:
Advanced nano-coating technology creates a water repellant barrier to help protect against moderate exposure to water such as accidental spills, splashes or light rain.
Not designed to be submersed in water, or exposed to pressurized water, or other liquids; not waterproof.

Try holding the power button for 20 seconds.

Might be just the battery. I've a couple of old Samsung which do that. Swapping the battery used to makes them start. Though increasingly thats not working.

Theres a trick to getting it back on, you probably let it drain far too much and it causes this to not turn on even when charger is in and been charging. I had it if u can search this thread for what i did. As i forgot some of it but i remember put it on charge for a few hours then you have to hold power and maybe a volume key for 120seconds or more not sure then it "should" come on. Might need to hold it for 2-3 mins but it worked i think for me. Hope this helps.

There i think thats the trick.

This is our recommendation as well.

Plug it into the charger
Hold the VOL DOWN key
While still holding the VOL DOWN key, press and hold the POWER key
Hold both keys down for over 120 seconds. This is more than two minutes and will seem like a long time. You might want to time yourself to make sure you hold it longer than two minutes.
After holding the keys down for more than two minutes, release them.
The Flash Boot screen will display, and the Normal Reboot option will be highlighted
Press the VOL UP key and the device will start a normal reboot.
We're working to eliminate this issue in a future update.

UPDATE:

If you have tried the above and it didn't work, try this:

Plug in the phone for 15 minutes.
Proceed to Step 2 above.

Oh and make sure you use a good plug in charger not usb charging as that wont help. Has to have a min amp number for it to work properly this trick i think.

Also this tidbit might help too before all else.

An update: after browsing on the Web I found the answer is to leave the phone unused for a day, then try recharging. This time the recharging light comes on and all is well.

I think thats what i did too, leave it for a good while like a day or two then the above tips.

On the 1st Gen Moto-G, how do I turn data off completely ? I see a setting to turn off roaming, but not to turn it off altogether. Android 5.0

My wife has had this, turned out to be the pin in the phone that connects to the charger was slightly bent from use, carefully bend it towards the front of the screen and that sorted hers out.
