So, I arrived in Thailand for my holiday.

we had a large van type taxi transport us to our hotel, and I have to say the standard of driving here is shocking.

the speed limits are around 50kmh to 80kmh, yet this chap was doing 110 everywhere.
the scooters, oh my god the scooters, no helmets, de restricted, shirts and shorts, all over the road and within inches of hitting cars and vans.

the driver in our van drove down the middle of the two lanes to stop people over taking and also to overtake everything in sight, he would beep and flash anything in front even though he was the one speeding.

I saw so many modified cars, blue and red flashing lights on them, neons everywhere. Was like I was in the 90s!

How do they get away with it? Is it simply the lack of police?

It's a different culture. Could be worse, they could all be driving grey Mondeos in stop start motorway traffic like us civilised folk.

I bet the Thai police don't close the main arterial motorways in Thailand for hours on end following an accident either.

and Welcome to SE Asia! :D

You'll get used to it eventually. I do have a good laugh when someone new comes out to China on business with me. The screams that ensue on every journey for the first week are highly amusing.

Most countries are abit nuts in road sense, India being the worst! Clapped out mercs and peds, Must wear through horn units there there forever beeping!!
