Owns nearly 80 per cent

Nvidia's desktop GPUs accounted for nearly 80 percent of all sales in the segment in Q2 2015, its highest market share ever.

According to beancounters at the market research firm Mercury Research the GPU market is slowly dying.

The latest quarter was a decrease of 11 percent from Q1 2015 and a year-on-year decline of 21.7 percent so Nvidia is the undisputed king of a much smaller kingdom.

King of the fools, nvidia = pay more for less.
All about marketing, people are still brainwashed in to thinking amd cards crash every 10 seconds in games and get 1 driver update every 10 years.

@ saintdefender: Agreed, Nvidia's hardware is ahead right now. What has been achieved with Maxwell on 28nm is really impressive. Plz god let's move onto a new node now though..

GPU sales on the decline.

Why? Because diminishing returns on each new gen. The leaps in performance just aren't there, so people are holding on to their cards for longer.

This is coming from someone still rocking a 2nd-gen Intel cpu because it's fast enough.

Not really, Fury X is around £550. GTX 980 Ti starts from £499 and comes with a game worth £45 on Steam.

Cheaper and faster. Nvidia are just ahead right now. Let's hope this lights a fire under AMD. They need to act, AMD's latest cards came way to late imho. And then the Fury X launch just went wrong. Pump issue, no stock. Bad launch. I'm sure AMD's next lot of cards will be good, thing is what will market share be by then?

Rectify the stock issue, fix the pump issue and price more aggressively and AMD could start to turn things around..

People are not "brainwashed " but once you get a bad name its hard to shake. People develop a favourite brand over time and they stick to what they know

Its already way past "lighting a fire under AMD" if there was any negative press to do that its been way over done, its killed them off, they are no longer making enough money to sustain themselves, not by a very long way.
No money = No R&D = No competition = Pretty soon no AMD.

Titles in articles like this one don't help do they? it just reinforces the idea that AMD are not an option.

We should all wish for AMD to succeed however, even if you are team green. Competition is healthy and innovation would come to a stand still if Nvidia was the only company developing discrete GPUs.

If AMD bundled some games cut the prices by £50 they could turn things around fairly quickly. Just seems Fury X stock levels just weren't right for launch and the limited few that are available will retain high price until stock is more plentiful. The pump noise issue stained launch as well.

I believe AMD will be fine for a while yet, but could do with better marketing, pricing on current stuff and making sure the next lot of cards can really compete with Nvidia's best. Not just at 4K but at resolutions where most of the players are playing.

They are already loosing enough Money Boom ^^^^^

I'm afraid that is exactly what we are in right now, AMD still exist, but they are not in it, 80% to 20% is not sustainable. the only thing we can hope for right now is for a buyer to plough a lot of money into AMD... but at this point who is going to be interested in someone with 20% of a two way market share, at this rate in 6 months it will be 10%. AMD will run out of cash reserves this time next year, and then thats it.

25 Million PS4 sales and 15 Million X1 sales will be generating a nice bit of operating income for AMD. I believe AMD won't disappear for a while yet :p

R:E the article title, Nvidia own the market no point pretending they don't. I always post both Nvidia / AMD good and bad articles. Better to say it how it is rather than pretend otherwise.

Bundles, better pricing and marketing AMD could still turn things around in the GPU space.

Having owned many generation's of amd card's i can confirm this is legit not brainwashing.

You're Kidding yourself Boom

AMD's finances say otherwise, they are loosing huge amounts of money and reserves are running dry.

Its all but over.

Do you mean it's legit that Nvidia are ahead? I agree if that's what your saying.

980 Ti from £499 + comes with game worth £45 from Steam.

Fury X from £550.

980 Ti has better performance at 1080P / 1440P and trades blows at 4K.

This isn't brainwashing, right now Nvidia have the edge..

A price cut, bundle and better marketing AMD could still compete over the next year until new cards.

AMD have blundered with the latest GPU's and CPU's APU's are not shifting in great numbers, although poor this doesn't mean they are doomed just yet.

Console sales etc will keep them in operating income, Zen is poised to launch next year along with better GPU's. It only takes couple of good products to generate sales and popularity. AMD can still turn things around, they still have a good following and people that will buy once the products are there.

This time next year things could be very different.

With the right price / bundles even in a few months the 3XX / Fury range could look more attractive. Things can can change quickly in PC space. Price can change everything. I wouldn't count AMD just yet is what I'm saying. Nvidia are ahead atm and it's clear AMD need to act. Let's see where they are in a few months before declaring them dead :D

It hasn't always been like that tho has it? the same "light a fire under AMD's Ass" press was going on when AMD were the better Price / Performance option.

Now they don't have the financial means to keep that up. they have not had the R&D to keep it up, cutting prices will only accelerate drying up of their coffers, perhaps not a bad thing tho, a quick death as opposed to a longer drawn out one.
