Dressing your age....

45 here and I had adopted wearing trousers and a shirt usually. I also wear a Panama hat when outdoors with a 3/4 length coat in winter. I only wear tee shirts and jeans when on holiday.

What do others in the same age bracket tend to wear and where do you do your main clothes shopping - both casual and formal?
I most commonly wear bike leathers, even at work, as that's most often where I'm heading in the next few minutes... I do wear a company polo, or a collared shirt, though.

I only recently started wearing jeans when the Mrs bought them for me and haven't owned trainers since I was 12.
I have plenty of t-shirts and longsleeves, though most of them are plain and black, with the occasional Mass Effect N7 on them.

You will never find me wearing any footwear that isn't a combat boot of some kind.

Formally, I just got a new suit, but have had a trouser & blazer style setup for ages. I have maybe 3 different ties.

I shop online a fair bit, although most of my best stuff has been bespoke cut and tailored, or is vintage (not retro) from as far back as 1941.

I say wear what you like - So long as it makes you happy and you're comfortable in it, you'll probably present a far better image than someone in a formal suit they they are clearly not comfortable in!

For job-hunting, the ideal is probably a balance between smart and casual.
Depends on the environment - Here in engineering, a collared shirt (short or long sleeve) with no tie and a pair of chinos or corduroys is about as smart as most people get. Brown loafer-type shoes seem to be the thing, as well!

Combats/jeans, t-shirt (normally from Mountain or Qwertee) casual shirt over it if cool. Work attire is a suit. I see no reason to change what I wear because of my age as I intend to grow old disgracefully and embarrass my daughter.

Why should your age define your behaviour ? I'm in my forties and wear whatever I want almost all the time. The rest is weddings, funerals, and important meetings (had two such days last year and just one so far this year).

So I'm 44 now and have started to feel uncomfortable with the way I dress - at the weekends typically jeans and T-Shirts with stuff like Fraggle Rock or Morph on the front. Frankly, looking in the mirror I've come to realise I'm probably a bit too old for that kind of stuff!

Correct you are about 36 years too old for that stuff^

Apart from the kids clothes exception above, you're 44.... Dress however the hell you want to dress.

just don't wear crappy t shirts with stupid prints on the front. like you have been doing

I thought that was pretty standard for 17+... I remember anyone from 18 and older would be ridiculed something rotten for doing so.

Honestly, no-one other than yourself probably cares how you dress.

Tony Pullis in a tracksuit. It's nearly bordering on trousers inside socks.

I am 31 started wearing shirts and polo shirts when I go out now. Most of the time I just wear tshirts though, if I am walking to the shop or around the house.

I need to buy some plain casual shirts next and some smarter casual shoes.

Wear whatever the hell you want, and stuff anyone who calls you out on it! Some men wear suits, some wear trackies, some wear dresses, the way I see it, it doesn't impact my life in the slightest. I wear jeans, whatever t-shirt is top of the pile, and either docs or trainers, usually with a leather satchel if I've got something to carry. The only variation is formal occasions or the odd suited-and-booted night out.

Can't be doing with people that are so fickle as to judge your character based on your dress sense.
