I want to play witcher 3 in 4k :(

lol yes, never thought of that!

hmmm I've got a 970 GTX, would 2 of them run 4k or would you recommend something else.

Also, any specific screen you'd recommend?

Yes gtx 970 in sli will deliver good results in 4k. I was using a 970 sli setup before I switched to 980's. So at the moment you can buy another 970 and join the 4k club. Pick any 60hz panel for a good price. I personally have u28d590 so can't say that how much improvement you can see with g-sync.

It's a large investment mate, I'll warn you.
I bought my Samsung last year, like £500.. then I had to buy another 7970 to crossfire and it still didn't give a great experience, but there was nothing better till the Fury. So I've now picked up two Fury X's, which meant I needed a new PSU, so I went and picked up X99 mobo and 5820k while I was at it... Now I'm happily getting 60+ frames at 4k on ultra... over £2000 later -.-

Yeah I think I would go Samsung, I've got a Samsung now and think it's great.

£500 for monitor

AMD hmmmm I've never used their cards for ages, but was an avid fan not sure why I switched to GeForce a few years back.

I've got a 850 WATT Corsair PSU, but not sure how much power these AMD cards take as the new 900 series require very little power.

I've got a 4780k devils canyon on a Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming mobo which should be enough and 16gb of 1600mhz RAM.

So should I sell the Nvidia and go AMD or stick with Sli?

I've read you need 2x 980 Ti for proper 4K gaming which is ridiculous.

Replacing PSU wouldn't be an issue, but surely mine would be okay?

I don't use a gsync mate.

It does take a lot of GPU grunt in some of the latest games.

2x 980 Ti's are a good compromise but if you want to max games like Watch Dogs or GTAV you will need more than that.

High settings would be fine, it would still look incredible. Are you saying that 2 x 980 ti's can't max out GTA V or WD's in 4K? or 2 x 970GTXs?

This is the cheapest option, as a good 4k 60hz panel would knock me back £400 max, and a 970 GTX (With the latest Metal Gear Solid game!) £280.

I wouldn't need to upgrade my PSU either, so a very simple upgrade.

I would need to run this through HDMI via a AV Receiver, it's the setup I have for surround sound, so does the 4K signal 60hz carry across using HDMI?

You would need 4 TXs as they use over 8gb of VRAM and a lot of GPU grunt.

2160p is about getting the best compromise and a couple of 980 Ti's are pretty good at that.:)

I can not remember which one it was but WD and GTAV are very similar on memory usage. Below is 4 TXs VRAM usage.

So this graph is showing that GTA V/WD's is using 32GB of memory for 4K maxed out?

So do you concur with the other guy who says 2 x 970 GTX with a 60hz 4k monitor would work pretty well? If not I might jump onto the AMD wagon, as the other guy with the 2x AMD cards(the less cards the better for me) seems to have a cracking time with 4K.

They use just over 8gb of VRAM per card as the memory is mirrored.

A pair of 970s may struggle a bit at 4k.

For a pair of cards going from worst to best IMHO would look something like this below

GTX 970s, 290Ps, GTX 980s, 290Xs (4gb), 290Xs (8gb), Fury Ps, Fury Xs, GTX 980 Ti's

Either try the cheap way of trying to get away with picking up another 970, or sell your current 970 and get one 980Ti, (more ideal for 4k than 2x970) or if you're feeling flush 2x980Ti. As per Kaaps list above, 980Tis are better than AMDs offering at Ultra HD and the Fury X is too close to 980Ti pricing while not being better than it. If you can't stretch to 980Ti money and want to save £100-£200 with dual cards the £450 Fury is an option.

Note of warning, when Kaap says maxed he is not joking. High MSAA raises vram usage a lot, especially at Ultra HD. That means Kaap is talking GTAV 4k with 8xMSAA, Watch dogs 2160p 8xMSAA, which even most regular insane enthusiasts wouldn't play with :p. Depending on your sensitivity to jaggies you can get away with no AA at 4k, as the resolution is so high it naturally reduces jaggies. Ultra HD with FXAA was fine for me in GTAV.

Gta v uses 8gb of vram 4k maxed out.

970 only has 3.5gb vram so you wont be able to max things out. You will have the power but not the vram.

Cheapest way to do it is 390 8gb crossfire.

980ti will run but as in this post games use more than 6gb vram (1 980ti probably wont hqve the power for 60gps max settings anyway) Stupid nvidia should have just put 8gb on the card but suppose that would have stopped all titan x sales.

I think it is important to highlight that at 4K AA is not really required. If you are talking about 2x 980 TI's not doing 60fps with AA off and everything else on ultra then that is simply not true. I play GTA5 with 2x 980s at evrything ultra 4k with AA off and it is consistently above 60fps.

And my cards utilisation appears to be above 90% in SLI so really dont see vram holding them back.

trust me I am not shooting from the hips :D

I owned a gtx 970 sli setup and tried all the latest games on it. You will do just fine at 4K with GTX 970 sli as soon as you turn the AA off (dont know why anyone will use AA at 4K). Plus for GTA5 you can turn down a few taxing settings like soft shadows and draw distance, etc. Rest can be pretty much combination of ULTRA/HIGH and that will keep you happy.
