whenever I've been to an airshow the planes only fly for 10-20minutes then return to the airport that's about 15 miles or so away.

I don't think they carry much fuel and I doubt they have filled external tanks as there's surely no need for it


One thing that always amazed me was the sr71 leaks fuel when on the ground, the planes titanium skin stretches as it gets hot and fills the gaps

faster than a bullet leaves a high powered rifle too

The only problem is that the last picture,just a second before he hit the ground,was showing the same from the same tank- its unlikely its vortices,but the main issue(as I was there) is that at the bottom of the roll he was quite low above the ground.

I have seen that plane perform before so it was unusual.

The fuel(JP7) in the SR71 was very high flashpoint and needed chemical starting with TEB.

You could drop a match in it and it would not set alight.

Read any of the interviews with Ben Rich about it.

Check the jf17 video from dubai this year. Tail planes basically touch the ground before powering off

That's the case with most aviation fuel.

Also external tanks can be filled on airshows and external tanks can often leak when filled (especially on warm days) They are basic equipment. It wouldn't cause this.

The number has gone up. :(

I'm starting to worry because I can't make contact with a good friend of mine who goes home that way!! The phone just rings and rings and rings. He usually picks up straight away... Been trying yesterday and today.
 
He just replied! Thank god. I have rung him about 50 times today! :p

My mechanics wife and child were about 15 yards in front of the crash, he was shaking when he told me about it. It must be awful to know you came so close to losing your family. :(
 
It's rather scary the point where that crash happened.

I used to work at Ricardo, and used the junction the jet crashed across on a daily basis, so it's quite horrible and surreal to see something I'm so used to on fire and in such a state.

From a couple of the big mid-crash pictures I've seen, I'm going to assume there's a load of foot spectators killed/injured, as you can see a load of people trying to get out the way in the one picture, and there's a blurred out picture knocking about the tabloids too :( . I've been to that airshow several times, and plenty of people flock to the side of the road where the crash happened as it's good spot for getting a free view of the action.

If that plane has crashed 50m closer in to the Ricardo site, then there would have been a much larger explosion as they store a sizeable amount of fuels for engine testwork and that would have been utterly devastating.
 
What are the rules regarding planes making such manouvers at a display close to public roads / property?

If you're at the show then I'm sure you've effectively legally accepted there are risks etc, no doubt there disclaimers on the tickets. But if you're minding you're own business on the A27, should you also be expected to accept that risk ?

Nobody knows as of yet what happened. Nobody knows what caused him to be where he was!
 
The air display director will have the legal plan and CAA rules. You can bet since the crash in 2007 , it will be legally water tight.

Driving has the most risk full stop.

Yes I guess it would be or airshows would probably cease to exist, still feels wrong that people that haven't chosen to be part of the display are killed by a pilot pulling a stunt (regardless of who or what was at fault)
