I've been completely out of touch of how thing have changed over the last couple of years, so unfortunately I'm in need of some help!

I've currently got a pair of 7970s under water, but I've been wondering if it would be better to replace them with a single, newer card.

What single card(s) would give me similar performance to a pair of 7970s in x-fire?

A Fury would offer similar performance. A 980 a tad less. I'm not really sure it'd be worth the expense for a sidegrade though, even with the benefit of having a single card. You'd need to go all the way to the 980 Ti for a markedly better experience.

I thought in the time I've not being paying attention to things there might have been something more mid-line that was equivalent.

As you said, it's not really worth spending £400+ for a sidegrade! Maybe I'll stick with what I have for now then.

Markedly better you mean about 15-20%..certainly not worth spending £500 for. 2x390's might be a bit faster still (20-40%) but again would cost over £500.

a fury or a 980ti

i just ordered a 980ti to replace my two 280x firebeathing heatfests

Thanks guys. Seeing as there's only really 2 reasons I thought to change to a single card, and that's power consumption & compatibility, and as it'll cost me £400-£500 to do it, that'll take rather a long time for the power consumption to be worth it, so I think I'll just stick with what I have.

I'm in a similar boat, bought a 7990 for £200 a while back and nothing short of a FuryX or 980Ti beats it which is too rich for my blood.

I went from 2 x 7970 ghz editions to an MSI 980ti G6. Mostly a side grade, and not exactly cost efficient but I do have a 3440 x 1440 ultra wide screen so does help a lot there.

A lot quieter too - stock ones will be louder.

A friend benefited from the upgrade too - both his and his wifes pc's now have a nice 7970 in them. :D

When you look at benchmarks the 980ti shows a 15-20% increase over a pair of 7970s. I went from 7970s crossfire to a 980ti expecting to go SLI in a month or two.

Turns out that 15-20% feels a lot more while running games. I couldn't be happier now. Doubt I'll go SLI with it as it turned out to be a bigger boost than I though. If you did get one you won't be disappointed.
