Well, we have the idea of being "Swatted"

AIUI, the (supposed) anonymity of Ashley Madison means that it was/is really very easy to register an account in somebody else's name.

How better to get your revenge on somebody?!

I wonder how many people will only discover that Ashley Madison exists in the first place when they open the letter from the divorce lawyer?

(Indeed, there's a thought, was the hacker working with a big law firm?:p There is nothing new about glaziers paying small boys to chuck stones through random windows! :D )

I'd assume if your relationship is the type where your email address being featured on a leaked list of accounts associated with a particular website is enough to end it with no other evidence or suspicion then maybe it wasn't going to work anyway.

That's a yes then. :D

So what, people were signing up their enemies to Ashley Madison just in case it got hacked in future and the hackers released the identities of everyone who signed up for an account? *sniff sniff* what's that smell? Oh yeah it's bull****.

Did they really not verify user's identities at all?

I don't think blokes should be that afraid to be honest. I mean, the dump is a torrent file. Let's be honest, how many of our wives actually torrent and ****? Would they know where to begin?

Won't take long (if it isn't already!) until it's being hosted on a website with a search box.

Can imagine this sort of thing being leaked onto mumsnet.

Then you'll have a load of women posting "omgggg that's our neighbour :o they've clearly got problems in their relationship". yada yada yada

This. Mumsnet will be all over it. It they will probably check out all their facebook friends husbands and partners and then tell them if they are on the list.

And if your wife/partner/husband has to visit that site to check to see if a name is on it, then I would be questioning the trust of that relationship! I doubt that it would have lasted even with the AM data being leaked.

Sad to see that suicides have been linked to this already :(

What I really like is...

1. The police are laying the blame on the hackers for the suicides
2. That there does not seem to be any legal recrimination against Ashley Madison for what is essentially obtaining money by deception and fraud.

Obviously all this is the hackers fault for showing Ashley Madison were not doing what the said they were doing.

Luckily my wife and I have a very trusting relationship with each other. We'd never cheat on each other.

She'd chop my balls off.

tHEY DIDNT EXACTLY RELEASE THE INFO FOR the good purpose. They blackmailed AM and told them unless they paid them money within a month then they would release all the data of their customers including the supposedly deleted stuff.

When Am refused to pay, then the hackers released it.

Thats why there is such a long time between the data been hacked and it becoming public knowledge.

I suspect there will be class action suits against AM.

A couple of stories had popped up about extortion and the like with this.

Another prime reason not to sign up for any sites with your main email, or an identifiable email.

It's of course entirely possible people might have signed up with other peoples email addresses (given that they didn't need to be verified). Either using a mates or just ones they made up that happens to be someones actaul email. I used to have a really good hotmail account, ended up binning it as it was flooded with spam, some of which was people having used it to sign up to sites ([email protected]).

As others have said, if you'd consider ending a relationship based on an unverified account on a website you've got problems anyway.

Or just not do anything you can be extorted for.
