What president would make the changes either? It would be popularity suicide but imho it is long overdue.

Is it not a bit suss that it's a live TV broadcast though which could mean political motives maybe.

Sorry but things like this will keep happening whilst you have silly defences like the above.

I could understand it if the U.S was truly a utopia of liberalism but they criminalise everything from heroin to Kinder Eggs on the basis of public safety yet think taking away a tool whose sole-purpose is to kill and maim is some kind massive humans rights breach.

US gun laws will eventually catch up with the rest of the world but it is going to take a good 200 years of ridiculously small and incremental change in which time tens of thousands of people will be killed by some gun wielding maniacs.

Civilian gun ownership in North America is there to stay, and debating it really is entirely pointless. In my opinion, it should simply be accepted and the real discussion should instead be about improving gun education and implementing common sense restrictions as, right now, buying a gun is incredibly easy and you do not need any form of licence or education in most or all states.
