Travel Insurance – Will I be committing fraud?

Knowing the response you lot give I’m probably going to get shot down for even suggesting this but I am unsure and have a lot of money to
lose.

Friday I injured by wrist playing football and went to A&E where they x-rayed it and put it in a splint. They can’t tell how much damage has been caused until I have a scan a week today. If it’s bad news my wrist could be out of action for 6-8 weeks.

In three weeks’ time I’m due to go to the Nurburgring for a driving holiday and in five weeks a golfing holiday in Portugal. Both events I won’t be able to do if the news is bad and are paid for. Unfortunately I don’t have travel insurance; it’s something I usually get just before I go.....

Will I be committing insurance fraud if I take out travel insurance now? I don’t know the extent of my injury until next Monday and as far as I know my wrist will be ok. On the other hand the damage that could stop me going has already been done.

Thanks,

Slack

Short answer is yes.

Also (I think), you'd have to be signed off by a Doctor as unable to fly in order to use the travel insurance which is not going to be the case.

Sounds like it to me, yes.

Obviously advice after the fact isn't that much use, but annual travel insurance is so cheap it's worth getting either as standard or as soon as you've booked.

Even if this were to progress to the point of a claim, surely the most basic check ever by the insurance company would be a question (and associated proof) of the time of the accident, which would be prior to the policy inception....

this - any cancellation of holiday claim you will be asked to supply the evidence which will clearly show you had xray and investigations before taking out the policy. in short not a chance a claim would be paid out.

as others have said - maybe consider a packaged bank account (travel insurance, car insurance, mobile etc) as that was your covered 365 days a year etc - obviously consider the cost of this and if the other benefits are needed first.

you have already been for treatment, so this is now on the record, if you apply for insurance and then make a claim you will be asked to give permission to contact your doctor before any claim can be signed off.

if you don't give permission for some basic questions about your injury, like

what date did the injury take place?
when was the injury first diagnosed?
in your opinion can the client fly with this injury?

etc.

you will be denied compensation, and also become a target for their fraud investigation team, for suspicious activity, which in turn could hamper you chances of insurance across the board.

insurance company's are not stupid, and also like to talk to each other about claimants to see if there is any cross reference of multiple claims with different insurance houses,

remember as well, although there are hundreds/thousands of 'insurance companys', there is but a few who actually undersign the insurance.

Yeah its like the employee who tried and claimed for breaking his ankle at work on a Saturday against the company's insurance.

Turns out he broke it on Sunday playing football. Inn this case it didnt even get as far as his hospital notes luckily (he put in has claim he didnt go to hospital till sunday after it had swelled up overnight). His downfall was the write up in the local paper describing the vicious tackle on him and him been stretchered off.

best bet here I would suggest is to check you don't have some pre-existing travel insurance.. often bundled these days with other insurance policies.. bank accounts.. etc...

of course it is fraud, you'd have to be pretty dumb to even start a thread asking if it is - just think it through even at a simple level

tis like asking if you can take out an insurance policy after you've had your house broken into or you've crashed your car...

and yes you do stand a reasonable chance of getting caught if you do something that stupid - I mean you've already left a paper trail at your GP/local hospital

I thought that would be the case but what's the harm in asking.

Unfortunately with this forum you get a lot of idiots who can’t resist making comments like ‘You actually had to ask' and 'surprised you had to ask'. Those comments don’t help me at all so go away and do something useful with your life.

there is no harm in asking, it is just that your intentions were pretty dubious and the question pretty stupid - there is also no harm in telling you that...

basically you've screwed up and you want someone else to pay for it - I mean how do you even think insurance works? If no one had to pay anything up front and could just claim after something bad happens then who is going to pay for it all? Do you think there is just some big pot of money that appears out of thin air?

you basically want to do something dishonest and potentially rather stupid and now you're calling people idiots for pointing out that out

How does one injure their wrist playing football?

How can you think that it would not be fraud?

If you actually intend to commit fraud, why would you already go to the hospital, and why would you post a detailed explanation on the internet.

Did you never play football as a kid?

Being a goalie, falling over, colliding, etc.
