TV Licensing Letter

I used to get these letters every month at my previous flat. It's a scare tactic they use to get people to pay up. I refrained from contacting them in case that invited further haressment.

I'm surprised that they don't abolish the TV licence fee and couple it in with council tax.

This or just get rid of it all together? Such a pointless bill i have to pay monthly.. Annoys me every time i see it on my statement.

had one of these letters about a year ago, another a few months back.

No one knocked on my door yet...

Probably had a whole trees worth of paper from them already

if you are genuine just ignore it and when they call let them in to see for themselves.

I had a goon at my door, I refused to answer any questions. I shouldn't have said a thing at all actually, he had all sorts of questions coming at me. it was like that game where you have to answer everything without say yes or no :p.
it was all a bit intimidating, but they called at mine so quickly because I had paid in the past regularly. easy targets they go after. they are scared to go after people that are not genuine but know will give them bother

Please...

Put it in the bin and decline them entry and remove there implied right of access, if they bother turning up, they have no right to enter your home. If they they turn up with a "policeman", state they need a warrant, signed by a judge to enter your house, and shut the door on them.

This exactly.

No thanks,Thats basically forcing all that don't watch TV to have to pay it anyway!

We already pay enough council tax thank you.

If the law changes where I have to pay a license then I will, Andi. Until then, I don't need one, I won't pay one and I find their incessant scare tactics tiring.

My point was why don't you just inform them on-line that you don't need a license, it's fairly simple and a lot less stress for you ;-)

Andi.

i had many of those letter, told the tv license i dont watch it (which i dont i i just stream everything) they still send me letters and phone me up demanding i pay.

Been getting them for 2 and a half years now at my current property. Don't own a TV and never watch anything live on interwebs so not relevant. I get probably 2 a month, latest one was last week, and they go in a carrier bag.

One day I will be at home when the licensing gimp comes around and ill give them their letters back in bulk :)

1) Technically you could take someone to court without knowing their name
Not without a breach of common law.
TVL operate via the legal system, which is contract law. So they can't take you to court unless you are in breach of a contract of some sort.
Usually they trick you into a contract on your doorstep, "been watching TV for long, sir?" "sign here please, sir".
Then they have you on breach of contract.

Using a TV without a licence is a criminal offence which you most certainly an prosecute without a name.

And I'll stop you there before you roll out any freeman BS.

Common law.
Implied right of access.
Freeman of the land.

Standard TV licensing thread tbh. Don't watch live TV? Tell them you don't need one online and get on with your life.

I used to get the letters, then a TV licensing guy eventually turned up.

The twist to this plot - I wasn't actually in the house, but instead I had a sparky doing some electrics / lighting for me. It was an all day job. I got back late afternoon and he told me that TV licensing guy has been around. He got fobbed off without setting much of a foot over the threshold.

That happened in 2009. No letters or TV guys since :-)

Awesome

If it ever did get to the stage where they get a 'warrant' it won't be valid as it needs to be signed in wet ink by a judge, a digital copy is not sufficient and that's all they'll ever have. Private company that are not a branch of government nor do you have a contract with. Bin it :)
