These new Segway Boards.

I would have thought they were banned already tbh.

When I've been on Segway sight seeing tours in the States (damn good fun btw) they've always stated Segways are illegal in Britain because you can't ride them on the public road or pavement.

Segways with the handles are actually pretty safe and easy to ride (despite all the idiot youtube videos out there!) and if they're banned the boards definitely should be!

The risks are different - risks to the rider are rearely seen as as important as risks to the general public. The rider has taken the choice (within reason) to ride the thing and have accepted the risks, whereas the member of public they've crashed into has no part in the decision making!

I'd suggest the big Segways are more likely to cause harm to the general public than these small boards, so they can't be seen as the same in the eyes of the Ban Brigade.

Banning them segways is ridiculous imo.. so cars/buses/motorcycles/bicycles/skateboards are not dangerous to the public either? It's just another way to control people and tell you not you're not allowed to do this!

I've shamelessly wanted one for a while. I work in London on Thursdays and Fridays. Would love one of these to save me walking. Ultimate lazy mode engaged lol.

Where in London do you work? Trying to maneuver one of those things around The City without flattening people or getting knocked off it would be a hell of a feat.

All those are allowed on the roads (bar skateboards, I assume). Segways cannot go on the roads, and thus had to go on the pavements. That's where the risk to the public comes.

Had they been allowed on the road, then we'd probably not be having this discussion. I don't know enough about Segways to say whether I think they should be allowed on the roads. 100% not on pavements though.

Skateboards have a legitimate sporting purpose, so those are in different territory.

Please don't every person I've seen on one here in Oxford has looked like aright pillock. That ranges from people in suits to "hoodies" types.

Well that's my opinion anyway

it's a shame and I do agree, but that's just because al these things are so rare.
Small electric transport could solve a lot of city issues, if people had a different view and they weren't so dangerous. Electric bikes should catch on more than they have.

No banning cars would solve everything, but apparently we enjoy liability and litigation.

But you shouldn't have to avoid them if you're on the pavement...it's their duty to avoid you as a pedestrian, given the Seg's speed and mass.

But having these would make pedestrians more aware of their surroundings by constantly checking and therefore increasing their capacity to judge things, making their reaction times better and working out muscles that they wouldn't of used in a normal daily walking situation :D

Tried one, fell off, got sad. :(

Tried again, fell off, got mad

Strange, as I have really goo balance, as I have biked for the most part of my life. :p

Did it seem pretty cool when you had a go? The money side isn't an issue for me but I don't want to be spending the money on something I would never use.

A very fair point. Also, the inevitable impacts from these would help to increase bone strength, as well as help you get to know your local healthcare professionals, increasing your area's sense of community :D.

Yeah it was, until I almost broke my neck. :p

If you have the money, go for it. Once you get used to how they work, and how to balance on it, they are a blast!

Haha, was it was hard to get used too? How long did it take you too get used to it (if you did)?
