British Airways plane catches fire in Las Vegas

I was talking to work colleagues about this and mentioned that it's crazy that people thought it was a good idea to grab their bags first. If I'm shouted at to evacuate I'm running for it, especially if smoke is coming into the cabin. My colleague's response was "Yeah suppose, but if your passport is in your bag then getting home will be a pain in the arse"... glad to hear people think that far ahead about themselves rather than ensuring as many people can get off as quickly as possible...

im surprised the cabin crew let them down the slides, if the baggage punctured the inflatable escape route then there would be big trouble.

Lmao at grabbing the luggage.

I'd be straight outta there.

Also with the landing gear deployed the slides often cause injury (designed for us when the plane is floating) do to the steep angle increasing speed. The crew must have been worried.

Yeah I read about this in the early hours, seems like a lot of retards were taking their luggage out of the overheads if you read the guardian article as they had a reporter on the flight

Bit strong with the word retard there, but I would as well if I thought it safe. It's not like they were all of sudden sitting in some field in the middle of no where after falling out of the sky.

Also some folk might of had their passport inside their carry on and might have a little trouble getting places without it.

i think the guardian report said on the radio the crew looked panicked.

which is concerning considering they're trained to deal with these situations.

easy for me to say sat in my nice comfy office chair mind..

Blimey, that looks scary! Mid flight would have been absolutely terrifying!

Wouldn't have been as serious in flight, the pilot would have received an alarm and activated the suppression putting out the fire and shutting down the engine. This is one of those things that was made much worse by actually being on the ground (the wind allowed the fire to brush the plane, etc).

No they were just in a burning plane and could have turned into a disaster very quickly like the Airtours flight at Manchester airport many years ago

Its ridiculous that anyone put their belongings above their and the other passengers safety

Again without being there and knowing what the inside of the plane looked like when these people got their bags we can't judge. But I forgot this is an internet forum and no doubt by the end of the day know why the plane was on fire before even BA know.

If some passenger was blocking the aisle getting his luggage out of the overhead locker while the plane was on fire, i think i would have kidney punched them and walked over their prone form.

all i need to know would be that there is a fire and the plane is loaded with fuel.

You don't need to know what the it looked like, its common sense that being evacuated from a burning plane your priority is to get out quickly without hindering others or being hindered by others.

Again we know nothing of what it was like. Looking at the photos I see mostly small bags bar one guy with a suitcase. For all we know most people had these bags in their hand already.

To blanket call them retards is a little silly. Btw I do agree it was a silly thing to do if the whole cabin is filled with smoke, but we don't know the whole picture and it may of been clear in there and people ach sure I'll just grab this bag and get out quick.

Reading these gives us a better idea and if correct it does seem a little silly.

Yeah the plane would have had somewhere in the region of 120,000 + litres of JetA1 avaition fuel. I wouldn't be hanging around to grab my passport and wallet.

I'd rather get new ones sorted than run the risk of ending up in a burning inferno.

the point still stands.

they were already 1 escape route down (front left) due to the fire. what happens if one of those bags ripped a hole in another (same as women are supposed to remove heels)? thats a bit of a big deal.
