Help me change car

Sounds like I'm stuck tbh

Depends where you priority really is?

You won't get much better than the vRS/Leon FR already mentioned for petrol performance and economy for your budget. You can get more economy, but you sacrifice performance (small turbo petrols do both, but are too new/expensive).

Diesels e.g. the 2.0 Litre Audi I linked or the Mazda or Alfa will give you reasonable performance, and decent economy. However you may need to compromise on Age to get something within budget.

If your back problems are that much of an issue, then make this the deciding choice - pick a comfy car that you like the feel of, then worry about the performance, then worry about the age.

Age should be less of a concern and certainly not an arbitrary limit - buy on condition, service history, talking to the owner etc. A looked after 6 or 7 year old car could easily be a better buy than a newer never serviced or neglected 5 year old car.

EDIT: What about a 1.8 Petrol Civic

8.9 seconds to 60, 42.8mpg, Hatchback, and should be reasonably comfy?

Thank you, You have given me much to think about mate

To be honest, your requirements are way too steep for your budget.

The usual suspect 2.0 TDI's of the era your budget allows will themselves only just hit you average fuel economy figure. But they wont be particularly fun to drive. You can remap them, and that will make a world of difference, but then you will likely need to budget for a new DMF shortly after this (although on my A3 2.0 TDI I then did a further 50k on the replacement DMF which wasn't uprated or anything). That's the only way, realistically, to achieve your criteria.

Petrol just wont get the figures you are looking for. They may claim 40+ mpg, but with the performance you're looking for, if you use ANY of it, you simply wont get near 45 mpg. Low to mid 30's I would imagine, assuming you fairly regularly drive it properly. You should achieve 40+ on your runs, at 70 on cruise. But that wont be enjoyable either.

I'd personally just run the mapped diesel just now and save for when you can afford to run a petrol that'll actually be fun. Or just run your current Clio as things aint gonna get hugely better.

lol... at that mileage, the gearbox will be about to fall apart... so be sure to set aside £2.5k for a rebuild or £3-4k for recon box if you go with the Laguna ;)

Keep the 172...

fair enough,

what about fabia vrs?

if i drive very easily on my vrs on motorway, 60 to 70mph, i get over 50mpg on long run but very rarely as i get bored after 10 miles at 60mph. i just floor it :D

i'm not sure you'd find a good fabia vrs for £6000

Hey

SO i laxed my Age and the MPG slightly.

I have decided to look for a Renault Sport Megane 175 DCI.

I do very much like the shape and how the Meganes drive, my wife has a 1.5DCI megane. Very comfy.

a chap local has a black one, and he told me he gets 40MPG and thats him hooning about. and 50+ when being carefull. Thats with a DPF delete and a remap too.

how old is your 172?

i would never spend 6,000 (loaned) pounds on a 7 years old, 100k + miles dag dag dag car, coming from 172.

up to you.

very poor car choice

Prefer the shape/look of the newer Meganes personally - Might be worth trying to stretch the budget:

Also bear in mind that whilst you are saving on Fuel, that's is only part of the running cost, things like tyres on the RS Megane are more expensive than your 172 (£115 vs £75/corner)
