Smoking in Vehicles 01/10/15

It's not nanny statism it's recognition of the fact some people cannot be relied upon to make the right choices not to risk the health of others.

Smoking at the wheel is a daft thing to do.
If a hot ember falls onto your lap you could get a burn, resulting in a quick movement to try to remove it, which could easily end up with a serious crash.

I'd say smoking at the wheel is worse than a phonecall.
You are breathing in exhaust fumes (burning paper and tobacco), which contains a drug.

There isn't actually any solid evidence that second-hand smoke causes harm.

This has genuinely got to be the silliest comment I have heard in motors ever. It gives GD some serious competition.

Or you can do the normal thing of reaching down to your lap and crushing it until it goes out. No different from reaching down to give your plums a scratch. Or do we ban plum scratching while driving too?

Yea, burning paper is just the same as that.

Give over.

This whole thread is stupid. We've had people commenting that to get a cigarette out of a packet and light it you need to resort to driving with your knees. And now people getting on like smoking a cigarette means you're waving your hand about like a spastic and driving one handed.

Sorry to disappoint, but the reality is a lot more boring. You can retrieve and light a cigarette one handed, no different from if you were fiddling with a radio. And you can smoke with both hands on the wheel and the cigarette hanging from your mouth. If you have a passenger that smokes, they can light one for you and stick it in your mouth.

Get a grip.

Forcing someone to breathe in your smoke is a very selfish thing to do.
I was camping not too long ago and there was a couple sat in the car (for some unknown reason as the weather was glorious for a change) for hours smoking.
A kid got out of the back of the car to go and play and ended up sat under a tree coughing for about 20 minutes, and not just a bit of a cough....the type of cough that carries you off!
Such a shame that folk don't care.

If people weren't so stupid there would be no reason to ban anything.

(FYI I am smoker)

Anyone who smokes in a car with people who don't smoke is a selfish idiot. I smoke, but I don't smoke in the car (anymore, I did in my first few when I was single) because muh resale value and I have a pair of nieces now I sometimes cart to and collect from school for my brother and sister in law.

When I was a kid, my uncle used to smoke cigarillos in the car. With the windows up. With me, my brother and my cousins in the car. Cigarillos are even more brutal than cigarettes on children. Used to get out of the car looking high as a kite with puffy red eyes from the fumes.

Finally got round to this, great news!

What about vapeing...?

Funny you should mention that. I've been driving to work on my new route for about 5 months now and seen 1-2 Police cars. Takes me 30-45 mins to get to work, think you'd seem them more often!

Vaping is fine, it isn't smoking.

Absolutely!

Vaping doesn't involve fire, so inherently less risky than driving while smoking. Depending on what exactly you're vaping there may be little to no passive vaping risk to other occupants.

Same rules apply as for eating / drinking etc regarding potential for careless drivng, if you're not properly concentrating and in control of the vehicle.

Indeed, if we are to talk about safety, then the iPhone/social media generaton need to be targeted, that's far more dangerous than smoking at the wheel.

Was watching that traffic cops program once on Spike and the biggest offenders were women and truck drivers. The women putting on make up as they drove. They caught one eating a bowl of cereal. The truck drivers were mostly caught reading newspapers, watching movies on laptops and on the phone. They actually used an unmarked HGV to catch them because the cars couldn't see into the cab.

I was under the impression the Police could nab you (if they want to) for driving without due care if they see you smoking in a vehicle, same as eating sandwiches, drinking coffee etc?

I agree with the passive smoking thing but it is pretty much unenforcable. We don't have enough traffic Police as it is and the ones we do have are spending their time dealing with mobile users and speeders/joyriders. Unless they propose to enforce this law remotely via CCTV.......?

I expect there will be a heavy Police focus on this at the start to get the message out there, and then it will fall back to ad-hoc policing where they can do you if they want to but probably won't because, meh, idiots gonna idiot and it is less likely to cause an RTI than someone on a phone or doing 80 in a 30.

This will be easy to enforce! The forthcoming 'Cigarettes and Young Persons GPS Implants (Tracking)' bill will pave the way for a system which, when combined with the existing ANPR system, will ensure offenders can be punished.

I welcome this move. Given that the large majority of drivers in/around Aberdeen are atrocious, and incapable of paying attention to the road as it is, anything to cause less distraction is a good thing.

Is it not the case that smoking in work vehicles has been banned for a good while though?
I still see loads of people doing that.
As others have said, I can't see this law being enforced.

Should be banned full stop when driving, it's a distraction and a fire hazard.

With the tiny number of traffic cops around it's not going to get enforced anyway though. I still see 2-3 people daily driving with no front number plates and they never even seem to get stopped. Then theres a guy who rides around on a moped wearing a cycle helmet (as well as no plates), though I find this one quite funny :P

The best bit? Look what's on the handle bars.

Thoughts?
Morons, nanny state, none of their business, etc...

They shouldn't have anything to say what you do in your own car or home, idiots.

Well no, but holding a fag is pretty much the same thing as holding phone, so there's that.
What ?

No, holding a fag is more similar to holding a pen than a phone...
