Windows 10 deactivated after BIOS update?

So would I quote my windows 7 retail.key instead of my 8 upgrade one? They point blank refused the 8 upgrade.one

When my windows (retail) got deactivated due to bios update I used my windows 8 key (upgraded from 7) and they gave me windows 10 key. So you don't have to give them 7.

Also I used UK number 0344 800 2400 instead windows support function within 10 (it connects with America, at least it did for me when I tried).

what edition of win7 do u have?

the reason am asking is because if it's home premium and if you give them that key they will only give you a win10 home key even tho you've upgraded from win8.1 pro which gives you win 10 pro

in particular this text:
Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need a product key for re-activations on the same hardware. If you make a meaningful change to your hardware, you may need to contact customer support to help with activation.

I have been advised to re-install previously, this is unreasonable as I have a fully licensed 8.1 Retail Key I would like the same to replace the Windows 10 key that is no longer working

thank you

you guys think I'll have any luck in getting them to reactive my windows after i changed Processor and Mobo? went from a sabertooth rev1 to rev2 and now it's saying not genuine .

on a more random note I have a spare SSD that has windows 7 on it, I could in theory upgrade that to 10 and then use that as my primary SSD. That would be registered with my current hardware, would i then be able to use that key on my current install? or some kind of backup image transfer?

is your win7 retail or OEM?

if it's retail then MS will/should give you a win10 retail key.

was OEM so I'm out of luck i feel. aleast i have a spare though, would just rather not have to start afresh on that other SSD just to transfer it to my faster 840 pro.

whats actaully the worst that will happen from running non activated windows 10? theres that annoying watermark in the bottom right but anything else?

some settings will be blocked, also i think it stops working after 30 days

Just did this and through remote access they provided me with a new retail key. Thanks for the advice!

So basically,

You upgrade from a Windows 7, 8, 8.1 install and you are activated on Win 10.

You need to change Hardware,

Retail channel -> get a retail key, stay activated.

OEM channel -> within 12 months, reinstall previous OS on new hardware, activate and then upgrade again.

OEM channel -> outside 12 months, buy another licence for Win 10 or stay with Win 7, 8, 8.1.

Seems very fair if it works like that. No one is a loser.

Nonsense. Whilst I agree that deactivating Windows in response to a BIOS update is idiotic, about 0.0000001% of users will ever update their motherboard's BIOS.

Are you serious

User upgrades to Win10 which comes with DX12.
User now wants to install a brand new DX12 capable card.
User finds out the only way to get his new card to run is to update the bios.

This is going to be one of the more common problems when upgrading to Win10.

I wish people in this part of the forums were a bit more helpful and a bit less prone to making assumptions when people ask questions.

The only silver lining is that if you owned a retail version of windows and upgraded to windows 10 and then this happened, you can get a w10 retail key for future :)

My key was a dream spark key. I don't know whether it's oem or not but I have used it on 3 or 4 motherboards and then claimed it was a retail key when talking to MS support.

I'm not upgrading to win 10. Not yet as I dont like what ms is doing with privacy.

Are you afraid of the fact they have given you a choice about the data they collect?

And if you're worried about the privacy with w10, you may as well live in a cave alone as everything, everywhere collects data about us.

I think I would rather have my PCs working at peak efficiency rather than wasting time sending microsoft data they don't need.
