*** The Official Destiny Thread (now includes 2.0 and TTK) ***

Didn't expect to get from Lvl 32 to 40 so quickly, given how slow it used to be. Feels like I'm cheating lol.

All I need now is equipment :D

Yeah it didn't seem to take too long to rank up to 40 but getting sufficient light is hard.

Tuesday night I had a good run, got from level 34 to 40 and up to 230 light. Though last night though nothing good was dropping :( scrapped my light level up to 236 but that is hardly worth mentioning. It feels a little no man's land as I haven't got good enough armour/weapons to do the higher level content that would earn me good armour and weapons. Unless my luck changes I can't see me trying the raid until next week sometime at the earliest.

I'm in the same boat. Ground my way up to 250 light but its hard going. Other people seem to have way better weapons even though their light level is lower. Which doesn't make sense because light level is weapon and armour dependent.

Still better than me! I'm sat on 207 light. Got a Legendary Hand Cannon and Cloak and that's pretty much it, rest of my gear are rares and old Exotics / Crota stuff.

Tomorrow's raiding will be hilarious. Is there a Light level requirement to get in? It's probably not a good sign that I can't even get into Weekly Heroic yet :D

I've played the trial (up to level 7 or so) and it's fun, but I have a few questions before I take the plunge:

1. Is there a lot of variety in the combat/encounters/dungeons (or whatever they are called)? The game play is fun, but if it's just waves and waves of the same 5 enemies I've already seen then I can see it get boring fast.

2. Doesn't it get repetitive visiting the same locations over and over again? This reminds me of Diablo 3, grinding the same locations all the time hoping for a better drop. I hate Diablo 3.

3. Is it challenging, or does it at least get challenging? I don't want to play and grind for hours when there is no challenge. This was another issue I had with Diablo 3 (at least in my limited playtime) enemies are no threat and you just run around pressing 2-3 keys for hours and hours.

4. What does the end game consist of?

Only tips, apart from play through the quests:

1) Blues are just as high light level as purples, always check them
2) Decode engrams one at a time, if it's higher light, equip it before decoding the next one. The light it decodes at is dependent on your light.
3) Use high light blues to infuse your legendaries!
4) Run the daily crucible/heroic
5) Get into the weekly heroic playlist as soon as you can. I've seen people doing them at light 240 although it's a bit of a mission

Shame I'm flying off to the UK for the weekend, actually managed to get decent enough light for raiding but won't be around to try til next week. And I'm going to miss Xur :'(

Re the light levels, I've just been doing quests and the Court of Oryx and it seems to be throwing engrams around like they're going out of fashion. Keep equipping the highest value items you find even though you might be going from purple to blue and the perks might be crap. This will ensure your light level is constantly going up and the stuff that gets dropped will also increase in value. I've managed to get to 273 by doing this.

There's so much stuff to do I haven't even contemplated changing to the other two characters yet.

Personally, I'm not going down the infusion road yet as every single legendary mark is precious. I'm within touching distance of getting my Bad Juju back.

AFAIK no details of the raid have been released but the general consensus is it will be around 280-300 light as vendor gear is 280. Personally, while I would like to give the raid a go as soon as possible, I would rather wait and be able to give a proper go instead of being severly underlevelled and squishy.

I'll start of by saying I haven't played Diablo 3 so can't make a comparisson to that. Vanilla Destiny suffered badly for this though TDB and HoW improved things slightly but TTK has made it a lot better. For example (without giving too much away) in Vanilla you used to just ghost a door and fight waves of enemies however in TTK you have to fight your way around to find pieces of a 'key' to open the door. Ultimately though Destiny is an FPS MMO and everything is always going to be some variance on fighting waves of enemies.

2. Doesn't it get repetitive visiting the same locations over and over again? This reminds me of Diablo 3, grinding the same locations all the time hoping for a better drop. I hate Diablo 3.

It depends on why you are visiting the same locations but yes it can get boring. The general trend of people playing is cyclical, loads of people play after DLC but numbers eventually drop of as there is no new content and people get bored of repeating it. Again, TTK has improved this with the number of quests however the quests are still in the same locations as the missions so nothing massively new when doing them.

3. Is it challenging, or does it at least get challenging? I don't want to play and grind for hours when there is no challenge. This was another issue I had with Diablo 3 (at least in my limited playtime) enemies are no threat and you just run around pressing 2-3 keys for hours and hours.

IMO most of the story missions aren't a challenge. The challenge comes in the end game content however the end game is set at the level of the end game at that time i.e Vault of Glass raid is level 30, PoE is level 35 etc. So now we are overlevelled it becomes a little easier but Vault of Glass, for example, is still a challenge you can only complete it by working as a team.

4. What does the end game consist of?

This is where Destiny falls down IMO, the end game content is left behind come new DLC so while vault of Glass is still one of the best bits of Destiny, the only reason to run it is for fun as the drops are all old stuff. End game though is in a few forms since release;
Raids - fireteam of 6 players get thrown in to a mission without much instruction on where to go or what to do. Many different mechanics employed; hold objectives, defend objectives, mazes, puzzles to work out etc.
Prison of Elders (PoE) - Fight in arena's defeating waves of enemies while completing objectives (kill a high profile target, destroy objectives, capture an objective etc.) with each play through ending with a boss fight. Different bosses have different tactics - one puts you in a containment bubbles which you can't get out of, others 'burn' the floor so you can't stand still etc.
Trials of Osiris (ToO) - PvP end game. 3 v 3 elimation style team death match.

There is also Court of Oryx and a new raid in TTK but I haven't played Court of Oryx and the raid is release tomorrow so don't know what is involved in them.

Overall, I would say the trial has probably given you a good indication of what to expect, if you liked it and would like to play some more then I would recommend it. It is an enjoyable game and it is possible to play for silly number of hours. If the trial didn't really appeal to you then I don't think Destiny is for you.

Something for nothing would imply that it was added to without being taken from, which in this case is clearly not the case.

They can still do vault of glass, they can still run the non TTK strike playlist of only the old strikes.

They can still do the non TTK vanilla strikes, heck Bungie even gave away the dark below and house of wolves crucible maps so they can keep playing the vanilla non TTK crucible games. More stuff for nothing.

Bungie have done plenty wrong - the original DLCs were poor value for money, not listened to their player base and churned out repetitive content in those poor value for money DLCs. They've been using year 1 as a beta and constantly changing their mind and even doubling back on themselves with the move to allow you to upgrade old gear.

But i've got no sympathy at all for those still playing the vanilla game having not bought any of the expansions. They've still got all the stuff they did at launch, and been given free crucible maps.

Sounds like destiny isn't for you. Its a gear based MMO / RPG / FPS hybrid heavily centred around replaying content for better drops.

End game is all about the Raids. These are 6 man activities and until your gear gets much higher most will need a full team of 6 to complete. There's plenty of challenge in the raids. Bungie lost their way a bit with Prison of Elders and Crotas end (the "Raid" content of the last 2 expansions") but the "kingsfall" raid in Taken King is bigger than even the vault of Glass - something the destiny community reveres as one of the best experiences in the game.

In addition to raids there are also the new Heroic Strike playlist and the Court of Oryx. Plus you've got the challenges of exploring and finding everything in the dreadnaught. Its not a challenge if you do what most do and just read it all on reddit. But if you want the challenge - there's tons to figure out and explore.

Don't forget its a social game so if you have friends who also play then team up, voice chat and run some missions/strikes. makes it more fun

Rubbish, utter rubbish.

what content has been removed ? all of the strikes are still there, playable at both their starter difficulty, and in a playlist

all of the story missions are there, as are all the launch crucible game modes like clash, control etc.. same with the crucible maps. They even get new ones for free here.

The only thing that's been removed is the weekly heroic strike, but that was removed for us all. What are you thinking of that's been removed ?

The nightfall is now light level based, and you can get to 280 light using all the vendor gear which vanilla players should be able to buy ?

Oh I'll just go do a daily shall I? Earn some Vanguard marks to buy myself some new gear? Maybe run some Vanguard strikes for some too...

so no content has been removed, its just the same issue with we've had with all the DLCs that daily and weekly challenges are on maps / games modes / story missions that form part of the DLC that you can't play. It's been that way since dark below. Its just that sometimes the daily and weekly challenges will be for content you don't have. Good thing that they rotate and don't stay on the DLC stuff the whole time. Fair compromise for those that have the dlc and those that don't.

Some days you will be able to go do a daily. You can go run the vanguard legacy strike any time you want. From the patch notes:

Legacy Strike Playlist
Available to all players
Contains all Year One Strikes, including original Dust Palace and Undying Mind Strikes
