Windows 10

Did a fresh install of windows 8.1 last week then upgraded to W10 at the weekend, everything seems fine, is a fresh install a must have W10?

Just means a couple more hours work really

Cheers

You don't mention if this is on a fairly 'standard' desktop PC, or a laptop, but if it is the later, and you have a 'clean' Device Manager, with all devices and drivers recognised, and with no dreaded 'yellow triangles' I would personally strongly recommend that you don't!

IMHO you are far better off, tidying up your existing installation, and leaving it at that.

Having recently upgraded a new Asus Laptop from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, on-line, I then decided to do a clean install using the official Microsoft Media Creation Tool.... as I am legally entitled to do.

I first found that the trackpad and keyboard were unresponsive, which required the use of a USB wired mouse, and than that a number of essential drivers were not immediately installed, and despite many hours 'Googling' and installing a variety of driver from Intel and other sources, I am still not able to get it to recognise everything, although it does at least 'work'. However Microsoft then insisted that it was an unactivated product, which required me spending over an hour and a quarter on the phone to them, to rectify the problem.

Personally I wish I hadn't bothered, although I am sure there are others who have not had any problems at all.

You have been warned! :)

Edit: Plenty of other comments already I see, with some good advice from 'MOOGLEYS'!

Apologies for being clueless or if the question has already been asked (it's a long thread) But if I hit upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 Home Premium. Then at some point in the future need to re-install. Will there be a full copy of Windows 10 waiting somewhere in the ether to be installed as my new OS. Or will I need to back track and re-install Windows 7 again first??

I upgraded a Windows 8.1 machine to Windows 10 over the weekend. I then found out a driver for my Roland (Edirol) PCR-50 USB keyboard is not supported.

Roland support said:-
look at switching the advanced driver to ‘off’ as this may likely get things working for you without the need of a driver.

Anyone able to clarify what they might mean by this?

Anyone?

When you upgrade from your Windows 7, your existing hardware will be associated with your Windows 10 ID which will be automatically looked for in future Windows 10 installs (rather than a key).

You can download Windows 10 for future 'clean' installs using the following options, eg. bootable USB:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Bearing in mind you must do the upgrade process before you can do a Windows 10 clean install.

Bought a Gigabyte P35v3 a couple of weeks ago. Search/Cortana has never worked.
Search on the taskbar does nothing. Won't let me type. If I press the windows key I can't search from there either. I even have a Search tile on the start menu which does nothing when i press it.
Decided to reset the laptop back to factory. Guess what?? It still doesn't work!
Raised a ticket with Gigabyte :(

I'm currently running 10532, all activated and running nice, but can't update to 10547 as it keeps throwing a flid!

I'm happy with things how they are, apart from video playback on anything other than VLC...

If I was to click the 'I no longer want to receive Preview Builds' option what happens? Will it roll me back to the RTM 10240 build or will it sit on 10532 until the released version catches up??

Thanks, and cheers for the link. I assume my old copy of Office 2010 will continue to work as-is, and I won't be forced in to an upgrade? I've only just noticed that the new version of Office appears to be annual subscription now.

anyway to tidy up that 'quick links' area, i have some unsaviory folders showing up

CCleaner can remove recent folders/documents and applies to the quick links area too.
But you should be able to just right-click, 'remove from quick links'.

I'm frustrated that the quick links doesn't populate unless you open a folder 2-3 times. I found the 'Recent Places' most useful in Windows 7 to go back immediately to where I had been previously. Yet another example of me finding Windows 10 going backwards as a new operating system. :(

Is there a way to get rid of the "search the web and windows" thing? It is completely pointless- you have to click on it to activate it. Which means they might as well have just bunged it in the start bar like before, which you also have to click to activate, the taskbar search box doesnt add anything :(!

Edit- I found the combination of W10 and office 2000 kinda funny- we've gone full circle and we're back to a "grey, square and utilitarian" look :P Paperclip's been getting in touch with it's feminine side over the years too.

Right-click on the taskbar > Search > Hidden.

Had to reactivate yesterday after a bios upgrade to fix a corrupted dual bios. Allowed MS to connect to my PC they did not want to know much  had to also bring my email archive up to show them the proof of my Win 8.1 pro purchase the serial number was not enough neither was my full name, address, home phone number, mobile number, email etc etc took about 25-30 mins the technician also called me from the USA said its part of the security procedure now to speak to the customer directly. If you are not available to take the call they will not activate until you speak to them even though they do not ask you anything on the phone its all done via the support app session.

Then finally they gave me a Win 10 pro key for future use on my PC which they typed in the app & told me to copy before they disconnected.

If this is their new procedure for re-activations its going to cost MS a lot of staff costs 2 staff & almost 30 mins for such a simple re-activation  or buy another copy!

Just upgraded the only issue i have is the task manager is showing 100% cpu, but i have checked with core temp and its a false reading. I have googled it and found people have updated there bios but the problem I have my Asus p8p67 deluxe rev 1 there is no page at asus for this as they were replaced with rev 3. Any ideas?
