FREESYNC HACK - extend the range

Can't see this posted anywhere, and I'm a gsync man myself, but this looks interesting and promising for anyone disappointed with the freesync range of their monitor.

Long and complicated, yeah just a bit lol! Makes you wonder though, if this is possible, why it's not done in the first place? Would surely shift more product if they increased the range.

the limited ranges on freesync are a function of getting the panel and controller to run without artefacts, running outside the pre-set range is going to increase the chances of getting stuff like ghosting, motion blur, inversion, but that might still be preferable to some than tearing, skipping etc.

it would certainly be interesting to see this done on the Asus to get it from 90hz to 144hz

It's not as if ASUS didn't try to get the upper FreeSync limit to 144 Hz.

It's not impossible, of course, but I would be surprised if it can be increased on all panels without issue.

Its not that complicated if you follow it someone else has done all the hard work. All they are doing is creating a new monitor.inf file containing the extended range which you then install.

Unless the EDID bit is unique to each monitor I can see someone creating monitor.inf drivers for each monitor which you can then just download and install.

If my finger gets tired scrolling to the end of a page, I class that as long. And therefore probably complicated

Anyway, anyone tried it??? Where are all the freesync people. Is freesync not as popular as gsync? Genuine question by the way. I guess it's tied into gpu and there are more nvidia users than amd on here I would guess.

Not sure I would want to try it. Sounds like it would introduce more problems than it would solve.

It's been talked about a few times, and can confirm works. IIRC it was Mr Evil that posted a thread about.

Its on a lot of the other forums and some monitors are seeing some pritty big increases in the FreeSync range. A couple of the Korean imports I'm looking at seem to do really well.

I was just about to post this but then saw this thread. I have a BenQ XL2730Z but I've not tried this. I'm rather apprehensive as I'm on my third monitor from BenQ after some frustrating issues, so the last thing I want to do now is try and hack it, but I'm still intrigued to know how my screen would fare after this.

What about increasing the upper limit of the freesync range? Most monitors don't 'overclock' well so surely increasing the upper limit is just the same as overclocking and won't yield good results?

Obviously the mileage will vary, but you do seem to get gains at both ends. Some monitors seem to offer a lot more than the manufactures refresh rate.

A couple of people have mentioned they have 4K monitors running 32-72~Hz over DP1.2A.

I had a go at it last month when I first read about it on another forum. I got my U32E850, which has a piddling range of 40-60Hz, to work at a more respectable 33-60Hz. Unfortunately I couldn't increase the maximum at all without flickering, even though the monitor will do 67Hz without FreeSync at 4k, and 85Hz at lower resolutions.

p.s. I can provide the inf file if anyone wants it.

Yes please. I was unable to get this tweak to work on Windows 10, so I'll give your inf a try.

Here's three drivers with ranges of 33-60Hz, 34-60Hz and 35-60Hz. I provided all three in case 33Hz doesn't work for everyone:

Are you sure it works? Have you limited FPS to say 34-35 and then started a game to see if you get tearing?

Yes, I tested in some games with fast motion and I couldn't see any tearing, even around 35fps.

I also tested it with the AMD FreeSync demo, where switching FreeSync on/off makes it really obvious that it's working. However it won't let you select 35fps unless the min range is 30Hz or lower, so you can only test down to 40fps with the driver I provided.
