Cat owners

I don't think 25% is anywhere near the reality. How is this data even collected, for starters. Most people who lose a cat aren't going to report it. Most bury them then go straight out and get another. And another.

And they say we're the cruel ones. I know people who have had an endless succession of outdoor cats near main roads, who keep being "sad" that their cat has been killed, before getting another.

Yet that doesn't seem to incur any disapproval at all among "let them live free" advocates.

Without wanting to tempt fate, I've owned or lived with 7 cats over the last 25 years and despite all being "outdoor cats" none have been run over or attacked by kids. A couple went missing for a few days between them but all except one of the 7 cats died naturally of an age related illness late in life.

The one that didn't was caught in a reclining chair in the front room (he climbed inside the chair and my mother who was using the chair went to get up and we heard a high pitched yelp) and then died a few days later.

Of course this is just my experience and anecdotal of course, but from my point of view the biggest dangers are in the home.

Wow that must have been awful :(

We thought he was going to be OK as other than the shock he didn't appear to be too injured. Sadly a couple of days later I cam down in the morning and he'd passed away so in hindsight he probably had some internal bleeding.

My sister has 3 cats and has just bought a fancy new reclining sofa, so I'm now very nervous around that situation when I go round there

It's nearly 24 hours since I got the controversial cat. So glad I did - he's incredibly friendly, seems very content in the flat, was fine all night (IR webcam so checked on him regularly!) and has had 0 accidents, and used the litter tray every time.

Thanks again for the advice and interesting reading. Certainly happy we got him!

Had ours since feb, he was born in nov so almost a year old! We do let him out now but he still wont **** outside so thats the first thing we need to make happen as we have a baby on the way and i want to do away with litter.

He is great though! Think we mothered him a bit as he is soo cuddily, follows us everywhere loves being handled but also can get very playful with me (play aggression) but its fine! Doesnt do it to her though lol

We leave him in while at work and its never a problem, seems to sleep all day while we are out! Leave him out some times too and he always runs up to the gate when we come home!

Couldnt imagine not having him around the house

*i see it has begun, taking pictures of the cat everyday lol. My phone is full of the little git :)

Congratulations :)

His a lovely looking fella.

Has he has surgery on his right front leg?

I posted in this thread a week or so back, get some decent pet insurance!

Luckily we are insured for all our animals which costs us about £600 a year, however since posting we found one of the cats pretty much unable to do anything on Saturday morning so she has been taken to the vets who have kept her there as she was really anaemic.

The girlfriend had to find a blood donor via Facebook and a woman came from about an hour away so her cat could give blood for a blood transfusion (she brought 5 cats as they had to get a match). She has picked up after the transfusion however they still don't know the cause & want to take her to a specialist in Birmingham for more tests.

Needless to say this all would not be cheap but it's all covered, the bill currently is well beyond the £1k mark & I can see it multiplying a couple of times or more.

we have two cats at the moment, both house cats - a 16 year old Half Burmese and a 7 year old full Burmese.
When we moved to our bigger house I kinda promised the Mrs that we could get another cat, we used to have 3 but lost one sadly a few years back.

The Mrs wanted another Burmese and found a local breeder and kept in touch. A couple of weekends ago we went round to see the new litter...all adorable! Picked one, a gorgeous Lilac colour that the Mrs is going to call Willow, last weekend we went back round to see how Willow is getting on and somehow managed to come away having picked another one to take home with us as well! This one is a Chocolate/Brown.

Lucky the house is plenty big enough for four cats :D
Trying to pick a name for the Chocolate one, its a male and I'd quite happily call him Bruce (the mrs doesn't approve).

Pics to come

Looks like an injection site - vaccination or so?

I was just asking due to how his paw looks on the 4th picture. Thought it may have been tendon damage. Our one cat came home with his leg sliced open and had to have reconstructive surgery on his muscles and tendons and his paw now makes an odd shape when in certain positions (like in that photo).

Might just be how he's standing - looks normal in the other pics, and if you look at the one where he's drinking from the tap his left paw looks the same.

Hopefully the OP will be along soon to clarify :)

A fine looking beast. Here's to many years of enjoyment. It is quite amazing how attached one gets with ones pets.

Our cat has taken to waking me just before alarm time, he somehow knows when it is. He comes and either cuddles in beside me and wants spooned or sits on my chest and demands stroking. It's both annoying and sickeningly adorable. I do miss summer when we just left the window open and he roamed in and out at will though!

Just browsing this thread and the bit about cats not fighting rats made me laugh. My favourite cat I have had (before my ex took him when we split), Gary, a little, grey and white exotic short hair (the ones with the funny eyes and faces) he was the most loving lazy cushion of a lap cat possible always wanted attention and to curl up on anyone's lap.

Anyway one night he curled up on my lap with a hole in his ear and a couple of lumps on his head and a bit of a cut on his side so I took him to the vets and they checked him over and said he had been in a fight but was ok, maybe he was being picked on by another cat in the neighbourhood. So I kept him in for a bit and a week or so later opened the cat flap again, a few days later he had a couple more injuries but was completely unfazed as usual but, I decided to keep him in from then on...

He was asleep on my lap a few weeks later when he literally rocketed off and out through the cat flap my GF had unlocked and I could hear fighting in my garden so I went out side and found the little **** absolutely destroying a fox... If that small ball of fir could stand it's own against a fox I seriously doubt a rat would stand a chance against a larger cat!

So you actually want your cat to poo in your garden and your neighbours gardens? I hate you
