10 dead in a US college shooting

Obama's statement is clear - if no change occurs things will continue, there's nothing that can be done. He's basically (through the gaps in the speech) saying to the gun associations and gun supporters - it's your call.

Problem is the NRA, etc. sees any attempt to control guns as inroads on their rights (unless you've experience of it for yourself you (in general) can't even come close to comprehending the mentality in the US when it comes to guns) - the sad thing is that in probably the majority of these type of cases in hindsight the shooter wouldn't have (easily) got near a firearm in almost any other country even one where gun ownership was high.

It's tragic hearing about this sort of thing so often :(

I just love the "it's our right - it's in the constitution" attitude of the gun owners who are preventing some kind of meaningful change being brought in. You know... 'cuz the constitution can't be amended at all.

They've already had an amendment on it, so they can easily have another. (I did see your sarcasm btw ;) )

If it wasn't political suicide then it would have happened by now I'm sure.

Theres hunderds of millions of guns in USA. Its not practical to ban them. Who you gonna send to take the guns off the people? What can you do to take guns of people who have guns?

it wasn't when they went hardcore on gun ownership. it rose and more shooting than ever. its dropped now though.

Do you not think that this might have been because they caught it on an upward curve? Nothing that the police could so would have an immediate impact, it takes years for these things to show an improvement and in Nottingham its shown a hugely positive impact on gun and knife crime.

Hmm.. Wonder what his motive was?

Another problem with the standard American response: he's now dead and so can't answer for it.

He may have left something that might (hopefully) give the relatives of the victims some peace, but I do wonder what on earth could? Knowing that your kid went to school one day and got shot by someone because he hated their religion? Is it better knowing or just getting on with the grieving? Who knows.

If you did force through a complete ban on guns then your more extreme element of pro gun lobby would kick into full on survivalist mode. It's basically their ideal doomsday scenario, the government are coming to take our guns and breach our constitutional rights!

It does kind of beg the question.

Just how many, hitherto law abiding citizens, should be US Government be prepared to kill in order to make the USA a "safer" place ?? /:

There is absolutely no disarming the American populace at this point, guns are just too ingrained into the very fabric of their society. Not to mention the gun lobby would kick in so hard you'd wish you had a gun to shoot them.

While most big cities are reasonable and don't allow them or have strict control, they make up a very small geographical part of the landscape. Taking guns away would require a very long, coherent and solid vision that would far surpass even 2 terms most presidents can serve, at which point next candidate simply has to promise to bring back guns to win a bucket of votes.

Off course there is, it would take a long time.

Australia had a huge problem and same arguments where trotted out, can't disarm us. Except that's exactly what they've done and it's worked.

No, they're legal but are incredibly difficult to get as you have to have all sorts of checks done. I was in a gun store a couple of months ago and they had a couple on sale for about $800. A friend was telling me that it takes about 6 months and (I think) you have to have interviews, etc.

Absolutely no idea why something like that would be legal.

In the UK they are actually encouraged for health and safety. They are not as they appear in the movies, a gun with a silencer is 'just' very loud rather than ear drum busting loud!

and the other question

Just how many, hitherto law abiding citizens, would be prepared to kill police officers in order to make the USA a "safer" place ??

I don't post but I do find it amusing to read the comments posted :p

It isn't the first time 4chan members have had an affect on the outcome out it's members. Some of them either don't think before they post, or literally just don't care.

There was one guy who advised the shooter to back everyone in the corner to improve shooting efficiency. The shooter replied with 'thanks' or something. 80% were egging him on to do it. Then 16 hours later the thread explodes with nearly all the posts congratulating him in some shape or fashion. I think this time something will change with the site.

The better question is what percentage of US LEOs and military would obey an unconstitutional order to breach US citizen's 2A rights?
