• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

AMD GPUs will power 'Oculus Ready' Alienware PCs

No competitor linking. Am not linking anything other than a news post.. If ocuk has any issue with this thread am sure they will close it..

Now had I linked to a page of sales then fine it would have been against the fourm rules.

I guess it's a slow news day?

It's an interesting point. People always refer to "The rainforest place", "Scam", "The Bay of E" or things like that. If they're not linking to them, why not just say the names? If mentioning them in conjunction with their products is fine and it's just linking that's not allowed this seems like a silly practice.

On topic, I don't see why anyone needs to exclusively use one vendor or the other if both can do VR, surely they're just limiting their own range?
AMD are really trying to shake their 'best value' tag though aren't they, joining up with probably the single biggest overpriced brand in PC's today.

As mentioned I think the biggest worry is the competing VR tech and if this will cause problems with nobody knowing what to invest in and as a result everything stalls. The GPU behind it doesn't seem any more significant than it does to normal PC gaming.

AMd has made a deal with Dell as well as Alienware if you read the official RNS which I posted in this thread, so not strictly just the overpriced brand.

There are a couple of VR techs so no idea who will win but the gpu manufacturers and devs will most likely cater for all since all the games will be developed with DX12, Vulkan.

Of course they would make the deal with Dell, it does specify 'Oculus ready Alienware PC's' though, I don't think it'll be something Dell will put in ordinary systems where margins are lower.

Over the past few years Dell have really brought the prices down. I remember in around 2004 speccing up a Celeron D rig and Alienware wanted $800 for it with no keyboard or mouse. I built my own rig, same spec, $280.

However, in more recent times and since the Dell take over they have been getting cheaper. I recently paid £1290 for a 5820k etc based rig. I worked it out to be around £250 more expensive than building it myself, and I get a next day on site warranty where Dell always repair or replace.

So I guess it all depends on what you value. Dell's tech service for me has always been absolutely spot on. When I had a M11x they replaced the motherboard twice and the keyboard three times.

DELL / Alienware main boards are supplied by the lowest bidder usually. Depends on the platform and date of purchase. Not that this is a bad thing. It's not great either. I see the plus points of all bespoke pre builds, but personally would rather something from someone like Origin.

At this point though any business AMD can get is good news. Bringing a bit more money into the coffers to invest in future GPUs and CPUs.

Was in response to the Alienware talk really, I don't see this as anything other than good news for AMD. Certainly isn't brand tarnishing to be involved with Alienware, they're not bad systems.

What started off as a good discussion soon went downhill with the brigade of 'Usual Suspects' coming in to carpet bomb the thread with negativity and nowt much else.

If you have nothing constructive or intelligent to say.....go and post in the Nvidia threads.

Always the same culprits who try and derail the thread and bring it down to my card is better than your card. It's not needed here, please go trolling somewhere more appropriate please.

Real shame the Dons around here don't do a bit more moderating of things like derailment of topic and mean spirited trolling....then at least some of the threads wouldnt get bogged down with abuse and personal insults.
