Astronomers may have found Aliens

What if there really are aliens building things out there. But, they died off hundreds of years ago, and we are just glimpsing into their past??

True the last couple of years have seen advances or the glimmer of hope for advances that many thought impossible. Currently though the only direct images AFAIK are blurry blobs of pixels ~8 pixels wide that are basically 1 colour shaded of objects 40+ times the size of Jupiter.

The smallest imaged is less than 2 Jupiter masses, and yes they're only a puxel or two but that's amazing, as these aren't telescopes specifically designed to image expolanets, if we can do that now, imagine if we got a dedicated space telescope that was designed for it, with a star shade on it. I think there will be mounting pressure for such a mission. Maybe it'll be the next giant space telescope to follow jwst,

perhaps it's not aliens, and perhaps it just comets, but perhaps the reason we've not discovered other "advanced" civilisations yet is that we are the most advanced civilisation there is. we are the first, there is currently no other advanced life out there... yet.

or it could be aliens and we're done for!

And that's the most depressing thing I've read all night :(.

That's my feeling as well. A more advanced civilisation even a few thousand years ahead should rapidily spread through the Galaxy. Millions of years? Should be evidence of aliens every where. Or inter-star travel is just too difficult and any advanced species is destined to be stuck in their own star system and end up wiping themselves out.

I doubt we're the first intelligent species but when people think of aliens they usually only think of how far away they are from us in terms of distance in space. Yet, given the age of the universe different species are probably separated by millions if not billions of years.

I very much doubt it's an alien structure but even if it is the species who built it and put it into orbit could have died out a long time ago much like dinosaurs here on Earth. Perhaps all species are fated to die out in the end...

I sincerely hope we are not the most advanced civilisation out there; truly depressing if that turns out to be the case. Never underestimate the size of the universe however.

Its actually far more likely that just not enough time has elapsed for more advanced civilisations to exist and that we are fairly early on the list - while the exact manner of life emerging can vary somewhat IIRC there has only been twice the time elapsed since conditions stabilised enough to support life post the big bang as it has taken for it to emerge on earth from nothing.

If there is an advanced civilisation out there, imagine how they'd view us as a species, it'd be like us finding cavemen, we's just seem so primitive and barbaric to them in comparison.

So whats the bet? Prime directive, relics of a dead civilisation, or zoo exhibits?

That's one of the answers to the Fermi paradox.

It has taken ages for humans to evolve on earth.

Why so? That's an assumption that I see posted a lot. Just because a civilisation may be more advanced does not necessarily mean they will be any less barbaric.

Is western man not more advanced than some of the indigenous peoples of the, lets say, South American rain forest? Are we more civilised?
