Which GPU ? 390 Or 970

You can't go wrong with either but the Nvidia package wins it for me. Good additions with Geforce Experience like ShadowPlay, DSR and you get a nice free game :)

970 all the way.

Get nvidia man, the 390 is a rebadged 290. Nvidias clock better less heat and power. Hold resale value longer and if they do have driver issues im certain Nvidias on it unlike Amd. Lack of crossfire profiles is testament to this, maybe minor in others eyes but shows a lot.

What does it matter if anything is rebadged when it's faster and from recent benchmarks maybe even more future proof where dx12 is concerned (still to be proved as there is not enough games out yet). People can say 4gb (3.5gb +0.5gb is worrying for me also) is enough but they have no crystal ball. There is no risk at all in running out of memory on the 390 8gb in future games where as some games have pushed the 4gb limit on occasion.

I guess everyone has there own tastes then they seem pretty neck and neck between them both so buy the looks of things i carnt go wrong with either

390 will be more future proof. All AMD cards last longer than their nvidia counter part in my experience with them. The nvidia card will likely run out of puff as dx12 games arrive.

Regurgitated rubbish ^

Pick which card as the features that suit you best and go with it. You can't go wrong either way.

Well the 390 is obviously better. If roles were reversed and the Nvidia card was more powerful it's obvious which card would be getting recommended based on what we see on the forums usually and even if the extra vram only comes in use a little down the line then it's better to have had it than to be stuck in the mud from bad design.

Overall you can have more vram, more performance, better price and more future proof due to that mix of specs or you can get Nvidia for lower performance, less vram, lower specs, less future proof but it'll be a bit more efficient and there's a perception the drivers could be a little better :?

Both great cards, can't really wrong with either of them to be honest. I personally went crossfire 390's to utilise my freesync monitor, it's one hell of a bang for the buck, performance is absolutely godlike. At 1440 I'd say go for 390, at 1080 a 970.

390; latest benches match what is said about that specially if you're thinking of going anytime soon to 1440p.

drivers? AMD's been far better over the last year; specially if you've going win 10; and AMD never burned a card with drivers unlike Nvidia......*rare but happened* Nvidia puts out some good hardware; but drivers seriously have been lacking.

Funny you say that about Nvidia drivers, as I and many others here haven't had a problem at all. Looking at the Nvidia drivers and AMD drivers, it seems about even for issues and probably 80% of those are some form of PEBCAK.

None of this is really helpibg me haha. This will be connected to a 1080p tv for a few years so higher resolution isnt of use just yet. Maybw in a few years but i can always upgrade the gpu in 3 years

Well obviously if you're keeping it for a few years then the more grunt the better and the fact the 390 is more future proof, currently believed to be better at DX12 (short of waiting 6 months to find out the truth we can only go on speculation right now anyway) and the vram then it's the obvious choice. As others pointed out, 390 wins and matches 980 in some cases while being cheaper, more future proof and better performance.

If you was upgrading in no time then fair enough but if you are planning a 3 year haul then it makes sense to get the best you can.

One is a cert not to run out of memory in that time the other might. DX12 is coming and so far the 390 looks to be ahead. If you are keeping the card for 2 years then again the 390 makes more sense. The memory config on the 970 has to be coded for in the drivers. Will the 970 suffer from this as time goes on and Nvidia focus on there new cards. The gtx970 is pretty week sauce when looking to the future. If you were making a bet on which one would last you where would your money go at the bookies on today's evidence.
