Dell U3415W is going back

I have the Dell and decided to keep it and just keep a desk lamp on behind me - so the bleed isn't very noticeable in games for me now, I actually forget there is any. In a room with no lights on - it can look bad in dark games, but your photo does look quite over exposed?

I also found calibration and using Dell Display Monitor did improve the bleed/glow a lot for me.

I purchased the Samsung VA panel but side by side the Dell looked a much more expensive screen - it's so much sharper and nicer on my eyes. But this is just my opinion, and if not looking at side by side I'm sure it's also a great screen - and certainly had uniform blacks in games.

I also considered the Acer but decided on going SLI instead plus I like the simple Dell case design. I've just started using it's dual USB upstream feature too, you can switch between 2 pc's (screen's and all USB devices) at the press of a button, is very cool if you have a media server/laptop or such like.

Anyway just my thoughts - I almost sent my Dell back too, but really love it now after making a compromise or 2 - I don't think anything beats it for the price currently.

god dammit why did you have to tell me the dell looks nicer haha :) when you say it looks a much more expensive screen what do you mean? as in build quality or picture quality? which out the 2 had the better colours do you feel? Was there much difference in the anti glare coating? Would be nice to get some indepth thoughts off someone who's seen both side by side

What are your settings? What did you do in the Dell Display manager to help? Does my display look worst than your or about the same?

Damn this saddens me, I've been wanting to go for this Dell for a while now, guess I'll hold off for the Asus then.

IPS is just as awful as TN. I have to laugh at what people put up with these days and to think some of these monitors go for £1200! I would not pay £400 for the kind of IQ you see in the images above. IPS required a Glossy/glass front just to be baseline acceptable. Anyone who has tried glossy VA will know what i mean, Until you ditch IPS and start looking at it objectively you will never get around to realizing just how awful it is. Did i say it was awful?

My £299 Eizo eats 99% of monitors for breakfast, And will do until this IPS technology dies or someone takes my Eizo IQ and runs it though a washing machine at 200c. Then it would be a fair fight!

I've been quite happy with my IPS panels, IPS224V (x3), 25UM65-P (x2), B276HK, 25UM55 (x2), and now a U3415W. I can't remember what monitors I had beforehand, but they were not IPS. I remember being amazed by IPS' colours and I have stayed with it ever since.

The U3415W has been the only one with a bit of backlight bleed & since the LG rep on this forum said that the panel's issues have "been fixed on a factory level", I might try my luck with sending it back under the "Premium Panel Warranty" thing. - But, it says you may get a refurbished unit back... Has anyone had any luck?

Sorry!! I think the samsung construction is nice, it looked good on the desk - I really just meant (unfortunately) the picture. In games I couldn't really say which looked better, but in windows with the same background - the image just looked nicer on the Dell. I calibrated the screens to the same colour temp and brightness, but the Dell does look much sharper (for example looking at emails in Outlook), and colours looked better on my background image - I think it was the Brooklyn bridge, and the colours looked 'cleaner' on the Dell. Not sure how best to describe it, but I just preferred the way it looked.

I didn't notice a real difference on the anti glare - pretty similar to me, but I didn't test it in much detail.

I ran some of the tests at http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ and the Dell performed much better for me, if anything it just made me question (if I was going to keep the Samsung) why it had cost me £80 more than the Dell.

Although the blacks were more uniform the viewing angles did affect the edges on the Samsung for me (some people have said they don't find this so I may have had a bad panel), so for me - it didn't really solve the IPS glow issue as it introduced it's own issue.

I spend all day working on this screen, in addition to gaming, so the text/windows image quality was a big influencer - and this no doubt swayed my whole opinion of the Samsung. I'm sure it is still an excellent screen, just for my requirements and side by side (and with the 2 sample panels I had!) the Dell looked better.

I know there are some user reviews out there that much preferred the Samsung, so it probably comes down to what looks good to you, I also came from an IPS so already like the IPS picture.

My settings are:
Brightness 34%
Contrast 75%
Custom Colour: R:99, G:97, B:99

I also have an ICC profile. I used a ColorMunki and Dispcalgui.

In DDM I put brightness and contrast at maximum before reducing them to above settings, I don't know if this helped but it's after this that I first noticed the glow/bleed looked better. Calibrating may have been another factor.

Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect, but definitely doesn't trouble me - but I don't watch a lot of films on it - and it hasn't been noticeable when gaming for me.

It's hard to photograph but I adjusted the ISO and shutter speed on my phone to try and get a photo as close to what it looks like as possible - this is taken in a dark room.

The second photo is taken the exact same time, but using auto mode on my phone - it doesn't look like this but shows how tricky photographing it is and how bad a camera can make it look.

Frank - Thanks for all that info, I have followed what you have posted and it has reduced the glow a fair bit, actually a hell of allot. :) It has brought the brightness down a bit, previously on 45 so not a massive jump but enough to change the glow.

I couldn't find where to adjust the RGB levels but I did find that setting the profile to custom made the image look a bit dirty and hazy. I am using TFTcentrals ICC profile (thanks badass).

I am meant to be having this display collected tomorrow but I might just postpone it for a few days to see how I fair with your settings. Im still not sure if this is a worst than normal for this display.

Can I ask if your glow/bled disappears when you look at it head on? My right hand side of my display seems more ok in relative terms its just the lower and upper left which I notice the most and doesn't disappear when viewed square on.

The more I use this display the more I am blown away with it for gaming, crysis 3 looks stunning. I also have been using the display for work and web surfing and have settled in with the extra real estate the display brings to the table. If I have to let this whole ultrawide display idea go I will be very disappointed as it really is something else.

Initially like others I was intending to send this monitor back due to the glow. But after messing with Dell display manager I decided it was acceptable for my needs.

I am not saying that Dell display manager will suddenly get rid of the glow. But it might be able to help. And from then on you have decide whether the lowered brightness versus the glow is accpetable for each person uses.

Of course this isn't ideal but then again neither is not using an ips display for a person such as myself.

Rofflay>I totally respect your opinion and I agree to a certain point that this type of panel technology is somewhat still held back by the very same limitations that has plauged it since becoming more mainstream.

But just as you see as IPS as awful from your standpoint, my point is the complete opposite but still the same priniciple. I see other panels as awful. You can give TN panels or what not gsync/120 hz whatever but that the same thing as rolling a turd in glitter. It's shiny but it still stinks:)

Oh awesome! Glad it's helped, and screen is looking really good in the pic.

34 for me is 120 cd/m2 brightness, so is great once you are used to it and I bet 45 would hurt your eyes if going back to it a few days later. With Dell display monitor you can configure the screen to switch to gaming mode when you launch 3d applications, this bumps up brightness a lot - but I just leave it on custom and my settings.

To change RGB you go in the OSD menu to color>Preset Modes>Custom Color>Gain

But unless you have a really good eye for colour it might be tricky, it was only when I used the colormunki I could see the screen had arrived with a green tint to it. It cost me £125, it's a worthwhile investment I think - if you kept the dell you could get one at some point to further improve colours etc (plus can be used on any other monitors/laptops/tv's).

I also have worse glow/bleed on the left of the screen - seems to be common with others too, must be to do with how they slot everything together! It doesn't disappear when viewed head on, but the overall IPS glow (where blacks look silver) is more noticeable at an angle - but I think that's the same on all IPS.

Sounds like it would be worth giving it at least another week then... :) It really is a great screen, and if you do decide to "settle" for any BLB you end up with you can then really start enjoying the monitor. Crysis 3 must look great - Killing Floor 2 looks amazing in 21:9 too!

massively appreciate your views on the dell and samsung ffrank, thanks for that mate! I think you may have swayed me back towards the dell. I currently already have an IPS monitor and i do love the picture IPS provides so i'd be gutted if i moved to the samsung VA and didn't like as much. Great input though thanks mate

I have a little bit more in the right hand corners, but when it's on you can't see it. I don't mind it! :)

Frank - Thanks again mate. You've been really helpful. Unfortunately the display has been collected and returned however I am going to get another be it the Dell or the Acer, I am going to have a think about it over the weekend. Even though the glow was improved I placed a dark wallpaper on and it kept on catching my eye. The bottom right glow/bleed was too much to accept and I would rather try another panel, either way I am hoping that with your settings I can get a satisfactory solution. Dropping the brightness to the mid thirties made a huge difference.

Anyway I am back on a 16:10 display and boy does it feel small. :D

I'm packing mine up tonight...Its a shame as the screen and colour is great...:(

I'm really scared I'm not going to game on 16:9 again...

Was looking at the 34 inch LG 1080p monitor as a stop gap until pascal....

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lg-3...e-widescreen-led-monitor-black-mo-137-lg.html

Yes its 1080p but will it look that bad? Will I adapt? The 780 I have wont struggle at least until pascal with it...

Thoughts and opinions please....

Peace

easy :D

Oh dear mate I don't think I would go for the 2560x1080 version. That res would kill allot of the experience.

I would rather get a 32" 2560x1440
