**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

All terrible. I ended up paying double and got AD08's, overkill but better than rubbish.

I wouldn't say the rainsport3 have been terrible. The rear end will only brake traction if you're driving like a tool in the wet, and I've encountered understeer once, on a corner that's known to be very greasy with ~2.5mm left on the fronts

Fair enough the AD08 are going to out perform everything on a dry Road or track, but it's surely a comprimise in the wet/cold?

Conti's SC5 ordered today for fitting on Sunday morning at F1 Autocentres, £427 incuding fitting and wheel balancing.

I guess my Dunlops with 3mm on the rears and 5mm on the fronts will be worth something to someone? Maybe for a track day or, dare I say it, someone who wants to buy part worns?

I must be getting old as I'm now coming round to autos now too... Over an hour today from clydebank/Duntocher to Hamilton. Can usually do it in 30 minutes or so but the stop start traffic makes me hate manual.

You'd have to pay me to go back to a manual. Great for blasting around B roads but I get about a day of doing that every 12 months :p Auto boxes are just too flawless to avoid these days.

Did I read you're in an E39 now?

I didn't find them an issue at all in the wet, but then I never drove like a moron in the wet, I'll only go 9/10's when I go on a morning run with the local PH crew.

Sorry, it reads like that but I meant the idea of autos.

I spend my morning on the 725 to ek and back at night or on the m74/m8 to clydebank to pick the Mrs up so I'd love an auto.

Should be getting an old e39 from my dentist soon.

They're not. They're good, but they're not flawless. I'm driving an auto at the moment (brand new ZF 8 speed Audi) and whilst it is very, very good indeed, I don't find it as gratifying as a manual (and i owned an auto 335i for over 3 years). It's all just very boring.

However, I will say that this is perhaps maybe more because it is a 2.0TDI engine and my views would probably be very subject to change if it was a 4.0l E92 M3 with DCT or a decent petrol engine with the same gearbox. I definitely think powerful turbo cars (300bhp ish) benefit from an automatic gearbox though, as when you are foot to the floor it can be quite hard to change gears quickly in a manual as you generally need both hands on the steering wheel!

Higher displacement/torque engines are definitely better for the likes of ZF boxes.

DCT or automated manual sequential (like E46 M3 SMG) are absolutely brilliant and great fun to drive.

Having owned a car with PDK for a few months, I do prefer manuals in road-cars though... but DCT/PDK/SMG ilk of autos are a lot of fun to use - for sure.

But the most satisfying of any box for me, has to be a proper sequential or pneumatically actuated sequential... I love those things.

Got the Conti's fitted today, a day early which was very accommodating by F1 AutoCentres.

Their price was £20 or so cheaper than Kwik Fit but I probably wouldn't use them again. It took them an hour and a half to fit four new tyres and a front wheel alignment correction. I could see them working through the window of the waiting room and they were constantly messing about.

Gets what you pay for I suppose. Tyres seem good so far, only put 20 miles on them however so plenty of scrubbing in to go yet.

Looking at getting a set of tyres for my 300bhp Impreza that gets taken on track days.

I was going to get Federal 595 RSR however not sure how well they'd fair in daily driving throughout winter? (Will be going on 3 track days before March most likely.)

Any advice? :)

EDIT: I need two for delivery tomorrow/Wednesday. 235 / 40 / 18.
Any suggestions ? Seems to be a shortage of federals at the moment.

Glad to hear all of this good feedback from the CSC5's! :)

My car is still tramlining (although not as bad as before), however the garage could only align the front wheels, they wouldn't touch the back ones as they were afraid to break something? I can't remember what they said, but they definitely need sorting. Not sure what to do.

Has anyone tried CSC5s and Pilot Super Sports back to back?

My Bridgestone S001s will need replacing early next year, and I'm torn between these two. I heard/read somewhere that CSC5s only come with 6mm of tread which is why they appear to wear a lot quicker. Is that true?

I've tried them back-to-back, but not on the same car unfortunately :(

Had CSC 5s on my S3 and they were sublime. Had ContiWinterContacts during the winter months so can't comment on wear rate. They do wear relatively quickly though if you read reviews.
Currently got Pilot Super Sports as summer tyres on the A6 and they are also superb. They will wear much longer than the Contis, again if you read the reviews.

I'm sure Fox will be along shortly to tell you that the Michelins aren't as good in the wet and they're pointless unless you have a Bugatti Veyron, but I would recommend the SuperSportsas they do last longer (read all the reviews) and they're just as good in wet conditions. I certainly have no qualms about paying the premium for the Michelins :)

Nice one, thanks :) I was definitely leaning towards MPSS because I had them on my M135i and they were amazing. For ~£112 a corner I can't imagine that I could do any better than that for performance and longevity.

E46?

They are surprisingly noisy though! What car are they going on?
