Howdy,

Planning my honeymoon for Feb/March next year and think we have narrowed down the area - we are thinking of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia (esp. Bali).

Hoping to have a week relaxing and unwinding on a beach in luxury, then spend ~two weeks travelling, seeing the sites, engulfing ourselves in the culture, experiencing the best of what that area has to offer.

I'd like to know if anyone has experience with hotels/resorts out there, beaches, key places to visit, experiences, best ways/routes to travel, hidden treasures etc.
Any info is good info :)

EDIT: If I could ask people to list their top 3 experiences with this area that would be a great help :)

Thanks

Just from my own experience I'd much rather do it the other way around. It wasn't after the chaos of a wedding so you might be doing it right but I found that doing the activities first and then relaxing felt more like I'd actually had a holiday when I got home again :)

That's the way I'd do it to

I'd only do 3 days in Singapore, its a nice place but 3 days seemed enough for me

I'm heading to Kuala Lumpur for a few days over Christmas so ill let you know what that is like too heh

Yeh I know what you mean, as we will hopefully be flying out the day after the wedding, and with it being a traditional Punjabi wedding, I can see an instant need to relax after all the "stress" so that is the pull to do it in this order... we could however add a couple days of relaxing at the end of the travels just to keep the feeling going when we return.

a lot of my colleagues go to malayasia quite a lot. All they say is it rains every day between 3-6pm and its so hot/close you don't want to even step outside

A week is quite short to cram in depending on what you want to do. I lived in Malaysia for over a year and have had a few friends in Singapore up until recently so have been back a couple of times so would have a lot of suggestions, but too many for a week!

In Malaysia then Taman Nagara rainforest is key, but that's 2 days plus travel. There's then a load of gorgeous islands including Rawa, Tioman and Redang.

I've previously given advice to another traveller couple so excuse the lazy copy and paste below:

Islands
Redang - One of the most popular islands, more couples/family than backpackers. Beautiful and usual beachy stuff, diving etc
Tioman - We went here recently. Amazing place, much smaller and good vibe - a bit more backpacky. It's duty free so booze is cheap, and all restaurants are BYO as they're muslim but let you drink so you just order mixers. Hire a rod and if you catch a fish any restaurant will cook it for you whilst you sit on the beach. If you go do the boat tour with a stop at the waterfall, good but short walk then a swim in the waterfall
Rawa - Not been but friends raved. Again much smaller and more romantic (our friends went for their anniversary)

Kuala Lumpur
KL is the only city but there isn't a huge amount to do, 2/3 days at most depending on how quickly you like to travel.
Jalan Alor - Must go for dinner. Just a street full of food vendors and local restaurants. Try some durian from a stall if you dare.
Petronas Towers, Central Market, China Town (Petaling Street) and Bird Park - All on the tourist trail but worth a visit if you think they're your thing
Batu Caves - Worth a visit, it's a short taxi ride out the city. Big cave complex with temple in, can either just visit or book a caving trip (I think)

Taman Nagara
Their biggest rainforest. Stay at Mutiara Taman Negara which is the only resort-esque place there and is actually in the rainforest. All other accommodation is across the river and very backpacky/hostely. You get there via boat which is awesome in itself and you can then do rafting, walks through the jungle and a few other expeditions which you can just book onto whilst there. Two days there is enough but worth it.

Others
Cameron Highlands - Tea country. Nice and pleasant and a break from the hot sticky weather - it's a good 5-10c cooler there. Quite nice to drink tea in a plantation but otherwise not a lot there so one night is fine.
Malacca - Not been since I was younger but basically a colonial area/city to the south of KL

Singapore
Worth a visit I think, it's not as "bad" as Tom is imagining. Much more cosmopolitan/compact and only clean by Asian standards. If you go then check out Little India, Marina Bay Sands (rooftop bar), Singapore Zoo (where you can meet orangutans) and Chinatown.

If you want to fit a lot in then hiring a car may be useful but public transport isn't that bad if you can get your head around timetables and the like. We went from Tioman to KL, Taman Nagara, Cameron Highlands and all the way back to Singapore on coaches and it was fine. Driving could be way more stressful and you'll need to find parking and get on boats for the rainforest and islands anyway.

Don't want to employ myself as your tour guide but based on where places are geographically and what they involve doing I would do KL -> Taman Nagara -> Cameron Higlands -> Redang -> KL -> Tioman (ferry is from Mersing so that'll be the coach destination) -> Singapore -> Malacca -> KL.

Thank you, that is very helpful :)

The whole trip will be close to 3 weeks, the 1 week was just for relaxing then 2 weeks travelling.

Perhaps if we land in malaysia and chill on an island resort for 4/5 days, then do the travelling and sight seeing until relaxing in Bali for another 4 days or so before we leave. Might be the nicer way of enjoying the holiday...

I found Bali to be over rated.

Having spent a lot of time in SE Asia I would recommend Thailand, I had a villa here for a week a couple of years ago.
http://phuket.anantara.com

its the ideal place for a honeymoon, complete privacy, own pool, outdoor shower, sun loungers, BBQ.

North Thailand is also very nice.

angkor wat (Cambodia) is worth visiting.

Thailand is off the list as we want to do that separately, that villa looks lovely though.

How do you feel Bali is overrated?

My current working list, these are options I need to research deeper. Just going from lists on the internet atm, missus has ordered some lonely planet books.

I'm thinking perhaps concentrate on Malaysia, couple days in Singapore and then relax in Bali, Indonesia as a whole doesn't appear to be easy to do.

Quality of the hotels were not as high as Thailand, I liked the food in Thailand more but Bali was a lot cheaper.

The missus really wants Bali. I can guess the hotel quality will not be as nice but as long as the atmosphere is relaxing and the environment provides a fun yet chilled experience then I'm happy. Looks to be a lot to do on/around Bali too.

Sod the mainland, go to Borneo! Go to the Mulu National Park. There's a fancy Marriott resort there now (which is a bit of shame, but perfect for your honeymoon!) as well as some nice cabins.

The rainforest is amazing, with fantastic guided walks available. The caves are also exceptional, with all the bats flying out, etc.

Kuching is very nice, with more jungle treks and beaches.
Also check out Sabah in the north-west of the island, where you can go snorkelling with turtles and enjoy sandy white beaches.

KL and Singapore are definitely worth a visit, but I'd highly recommend Borneo over the mainland. So much to do!

Brunei is also worth a visit as it's very remote.

Ok, I went to the shangri-la rasa sayang in batu ferringhi. Was the best ever.
Hotel was amazing and it had the best of both worlds. Exclusivity and chilled out atmosphere in the hotel and then the night markets just outside. Price was reasonable and there was so much to do on the island. We spent a few days scoping out the island and hired a car for about £20.
Amazing experience!

For Singapore I can recommend the mandarin oriental club rooms

For activities add sentosa island to your list
