msigtx980 4g to msi gtx980ti 6g is it worth it?

Witcher 3 is hard work on an overclocked TitanX @1080p so a GTX 980 is definitely not up to the job.

Definitely worth buying the witcher 3 for about 20 quid then spending 200 to run it at 50 instead of 40 fps eh!

my spec is sandybridge 2600k 16 gb corsair 1600 ddr3 eizo fs2333 monitor Samsung 850pro 512 gb ,wd 1tb h/drive xonar sound card black corsair 600t case be quiet cpu cooler .
games witcher 3 ,dragon age inquisition, far cry 4, Elder scrolls online, skyrim, total war Attila, and WoW

You could depending on motherboard and psu, get another 980 for sli and get a 1440p monitor..

Of course, you can just turn GimpWorks off in TW3 and instantly boost your FPS by 40% (and your minimums by 100%+), since it's that which destroys the FPS as per usual. ;)

If I was going to spend £200+ on upgrading a haircut, I'd make it mine, not Geralt's. :p

If I want to turn stuff off I may as well get my HD 5970 out and use that to run every modern game.:D

The OP also said he likes playing Attila Total War.

There is absolutely no chance of him getting decent fps if he tries to max it out on a GTX 980 @1080p

Here is one I did earlier as they say on Blue Peter.

TitanX @1441/2002
5960X @4.0
1080p

Wait... What?.. So You're suggesting he upgrades his pc to a 980ti to still get less than 40fps average on ONE game.

If your pc struggles with it then I think maybe the game is just poorly optimised and the Op needs to just put up with holding back on some settings. I've not seen or played this attilla but I'm assuming it's an Rts. And if so, it's not gonna benefit from a high framerate like a competitive fps.

You have lots of cash Kaapstad but let's be honest, some purchases are frankly dumb.

In fact, Kaapstad I just searched your name in the Pc gaming forum...

You've posted in 4 threads. In nigh on 20k posts with 99 percent being in graphics cards, you actually have such a tiny interest in playing the games you benchmark.

You talk a lot about the witcher 3 around here but I would think anyone who had played it or even shown interest before its release would have discussed it in the gaming thread.

Your builds are expensive and impressive here but you are starting to come across delusional about what returns are worthy of investment.

In the same boat mate but I game at 1440p and so far resisted.
But agreed just turn hair works off and save your money.
If it was my choice I would upgrade the cpu mobo and ram.

For the price of a 980Ti you could get a new cpu, mobo and ram! Saying that, I grabbed a 980Ti in the sale.

Thanks for your kind words lol.

The OP said he likes playing Attila Total War and Witcher 3.

Both of these games require some serious GPU grunt even at 1080p which is why I said look at the 980 Ti.

I have posted screenshots of these games running and the fps. Perhaps you could post something useful instead of abusing me lol.

Almost forgot, did you look up 8 Pack as well as he has a lot more gear than me and better too and he also said to the OP to get a GTX 980 Ti.

now in answer to questions raised m/board is an asus p8p67pro 3.1.
im thinking of getting another ips monitor but 144hz 2560x1440 27" the choice is now looking at possibly an eizo fs2735 as most g-sync ips have inherent issues with QC.as seen in forums here and elsewhere.i was surprised when I visited a local pc shop that they had an aoc g2770pf on display and witcher 3 looked quite reasonable color wise.but ive not seen many reviews of it and I found out its a TN screen .would welcome comments as to whether my m/board would support sli and get reasonable fps compared to the gtx980ti ty

I wasn't abusing you.

Using 8pack who is a benchmarking enthusiast and also someone who works in a job of promoting sales I wouldn't say his opinion is sensible here either.

2 games that require some grunt doesn't justify a £500 (220 if selling 980 for 280) outlay.

The witcher runs great on my 980 at 1440p. It's not as fast as quad titans but it's also not about 3 grands worth of cards.

His current card would still be classed as high end. Buying now to play current games a little better would be pretty pointless when the Op could just hold out for a real jump.

Marcus about 2 weeks ago before I finished my current build I had that exact Asus motherboard. I was running a 2500k at 4.5ghz and I had 2x7970/7950 in crossfire.

I sold it because my friend wanted a pc and I felt like having a little change. I changed to a 5820k x99 build with a Gtx980.

Performance it's leaps ahead in compute tasks but in general use and gaming the difference isn't exactly that huge. My old crossfire cards were a tiny bit slower than the 980 but the 980 is smoother without occasional stutter in some games.

Fps minimums improved a lot.

It's nice to future proof the rest of your build. My change was unnecessary really but due to circumstances it wasn't costly.

I do all my gaming at 1440p and it's not left me wanting for more yet.

I do wait for a real generational gap next year. Gaming at 4k with 60fps will be a nice experience for us all. If it materialises.

980 GTX just took a price cut IIRC.

Perfect 1080p card.

two Titan X are capable of such things, it's materialised already. Although I'm a solid believer in the fact that - if you want to use 4K, you really need the screen estate to make full use of it. 36"+. I loved my Phillips 4K 40" VA panel, but I still ended up going back to the Swift.

Yeah I was implying more of a single card solution for 4k.

I just think some people seem to dive in and recommend spending 500 quid when the real world difference for some posters will be marginal.

If coming from a single 7950 or 670 then maybe. But the 980 to 980ti isn't worth the money for most.

This !

Unless you're buying a 4k monitor and struggling for extra vram, you'd be stupid to go from a 980 to a 980 ti just because of one or two games where Nvidia hasn't optimized their extra's properly ( Hair works / God Rays ). If you really need more oomph just overclock the 980!!

My 980 is currently running at 1563/7895 and it flies through pretty much all my games bar the odd one that needs optimizing better.

You obviously have not tried running GTA V or Watch Dogs either maxed.

If you want to use max settings even @1080p the GTX 980 is not up to the job.

Shadow of Mordor is another game that makes the 4gb of VRAM on the 980 look inadequate.

I am a GTX 980 owner so I am not biased against the card.

Firstly. Shadow of Mordor is shallow and boring as hell so if investing money to run that game seems a good idea then you have different priorities to me.

Regarding Gta V I run it at almost all max settings at 1440p. Maybe drop the odd one or two but I don't feel I need the extra tiny bit of draw distance enough to warrant spending £200.

Watchdogs again is a very average game and I played it two days ago, when I got driving into congested areas and crashing the framerate plummeted so I did drop a few settings to fix that. The game looked hardly any different.

I've been playing Farcry 4 maxed out and that's been brilliant at 1440p. Totally playable. Not one noticeable bit of slowdown for me.

The point is about return on investment. You aren't the average pc gamer. You are a benchmarking enthusiast Kaapstad.

This Op is about upgrading a 980 to a 980ti months from a new generation of cards. He's going from high end gfx card to top end graphics card... It's really not worth it.

Aren't total war games cpu dependant? Maybe that affects things Too.
