ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

It's very useful when taken into account of the coalition. It's not a very big area and with many countries supplying planes, it means IF cordinated properly you could quite easily have 24hr coverage so when Intel cones in you have assists within minutes that can take it out. It isn't a very big area in terms of air coverage, Syria is equivalent to a 270mile square and Isis control somewhere around 1/4 of that, so at what 600mph 4 aircraft can have a large impact and coalition where many cui tries supply aircraft it's even better coverage.

Perhaps, but we don't have that cooperation, I fully expect a disaster to occur.

I have to ask - how do you bomb an idea?

We aren't so moot point.
And a silly statement, did we bomb the idea if Nazism in ww2? No we bombed Infrastructure, resources and people and Nazism is still alive and well today, just pushed to the extreme fringes where for the most part its not an issue.
You kill their ability to wage war, capture new land etc, you can never kill an idea and never have been able to.

Agree with the decision to allow bombing of targets in Syria but with the caveat this does need to be against specific confirmed high asset targets. We don't want to waste time and money bombing worthless targets - given the nasty situation which will certainly occur if a RAF crew is shot down and captured alive. A contingency I would hope the Government has considered - even in the Gulf War(s) the Iraqis more or less abided by the Geneva Convention but that's not going to be the case with ISIL.

I think people don't realise the impact of having just a few extra aircraft means. By providing extra 'CAPs' it either relieves the demand on the rest of the coalition to provide them or it means they can spread more of them over a greater area. An aircraft CAP is a large area and they will maintain it until called in on a strike. Further, we can pick up several deliberate targets instead. The US isn't sending swathes of planes as if it was the film independence day or something. I think some people over estimate things somewhat.

Belgium have a small offering yet their F16s having been doing a lot of effective work.

Exactly - dont really understand why people are struggling to grasp this.

Only read the last few pages so apologies if I've missed this.
Did Russia tell us to keep out of this or is that just propoganda to?
Also is it true that it's U.S. and us on one side and Russia China on the other? And if so how will that play out ?

Because it's not remotely the same? Bombing Nazi Germany took place as part of a co-ordinated war on multiple fronts by land, sea and air. It's nothing like Daesh in Syria and Iraq. Sure, the Iraqi Army is doing some fighting back against them whilst they're bombed, but it's not comparable at all.

I assume they'll be carrying a pistol for just such an event...

What are they going to do with a pistol - fight there way out of Syria with 6 bullets?

I'd imaging a massive rescue op if a pilot goes down given the consequences of such an event in this theatre.

But ISIS don't have traditional command and control structures.

For want of a better phrase they are just family men, mixing in with the local community.

Should they find themselves cornered by IS fighters and about to be captured, then I'm sure using that pistol on themselves would seem awfully inviting considering what happened to that Jordanian pilot, don't you think?

Should the worst happen, David Cameron should deliver the news personally to the pilots family.
