Windows 10

Not being rude to anyone.

But not quite sure why anyone would buy Windows 10 OEM on DVD (£79.99). When the Retail version on a USB3 thumb drive is only £10 more?

I don't know why anyone would pay £80 for OEM windows 10 when you can windows vista and 7 licences for next to nothing and free upgrade

Because some of us want a retail version I suspect and can't be bothered with faffing around upgrading, then downloading the ISO and re-installing (to get a clean installation). Only to end up with a non retail version of Windows 10. I rather like the little plastic card that I now have with a genuine full retail key on it;)

Each to their own. Be a boring world if we all thought and did the same thing.

I'd much rather a retail version, doesn't matter wether it's from buying a retail copy or from upgrading a retail version of Windows Vista/7/8...

However whhere I am all Retail versions are stupidly expensive, so for the time being I'm running my upgraded retail Windows 8 and I'm on the insider program, also have an unused spare MSDN key for testing and work purposes...

It is essentially a retail version, and you no longer need to, the new ISO accepts w7/8/8.1 keys

Not disputing you ... But if that's the case, then things have changed since I looked at the situation. Right up to the time that Windows 10 was released, there was all sorts of conflicting stories about what happens if you upgrade a retail version of Windows 7 etc. A fair bit of the conflicting info. was even coming from Microsoft themselves

Though I do take note of your use of the word essentially.

This is one of the sites that I looked at when deciding what to do with my main PC.

http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/soft...retail-users-cant-transfer-windows-10-after-a

That doesn't sound like you end up with a retail version to me.

And the above is what a lot of other sites were saying back then.

Or have things changed (once again) since then?

Decided in the end, that considering what I was spending to upgrade my main PC (best part of a grand) that another £80 here, or there, wasn't going to break the bank. Also means that I could use my Windows 7 (retail) on another PC.

Had my first interaction with Windows 10 today via a friends brand new laptop that was riddled with problems.

Random black screen after game intros with sound still playing. Alt tab showed a glimpse of the game before going blank again. Turned out to be amd gaming evolved.

Server busy switch to/retry in every boot. Ended up being caused by steam auto running on boot.

I thought I'd finally fixed everything only to find that by using a USB mouse (hate touch pads) windows had completely forgotten the touch pad was ever there and removing the USB mouse made the cursor disappear. Tried many a fix including reinstalling the touch pad drivers to no avail.

Finally given up and decided a full reset was the best option, but that has started the biggest farce yet! It took almost 2 hours to get to 99% and that was 4 hours ago! Yep apparently it's quite common for the reset to stop at 99% for up to 40 hours before finally finishing! Is this a joke? Even found this tidbit on lenovo's support section.

Microsoft Windows 10 Recovery process may stop at 99% for several hours
Symptom
When using the “Remove files and clean the drive” option of the Microsoft Windows 10 Reset, the process may appear to be hung at 99% for 4 hours or more.

Solution
None. The user should wait several hours for the process to finish.

Additional Information
According to Microsoft, this is working as designed.

That solution and additional info!

So happy I've decided to hold off from installing it myself for at least another 5 or so months.

You end up with what ever license you upgrade from.

And what's changed is the new ios allows you to enter 7/8 keys.

So... are Microsoft now saying that I could take that ISO and my new key and re-use it when I come to re-build my PC in say 2 years time? That could be handy if that is the case. If not, then that's not retail to me!

Even if this is the case now. I would still not have chosen to do it this way (IE. upgrade). As I would have first had to install Windows 7 to my new PC. Upgraded it. And to be certain it was a clean (IE. new install, rather than an upgraded OS)... I would then have had to down load the .ISO and install again. Big problem for me with my new PC, would have been that my OS drive was an Samsung SM951 and as far as I'm aware, there are no native NVMe drivers for Windows 7. Might have managed to get round this. But a hell of a lot of work for me to save eighty quid.

Good old Microsoft... always as clear as mud :)

Yes and have since release. As long as you register the key in the first 12 months. Initially that was via the upgrade but since the big update a few weeks ago, the new ios allows you to simply enter the win7/8/8.1 key. basically you wasted your money

Yup - I've spent far too much time looking at the install/update screens with Windows 10 :S hence why I'm vehemently against forced/automatic updates.

On the plus side I can now configure the start menu pretty much as I want - would be nice if there was a more elegant/flexible system for customising it but I can atleast get what I want now (other than the icons look ugly as sin)... if they'd just give me the option of a Windows 7 like look for windows, explorer, icons, etc. more control over Windows Update (even if its just a button to skip installing updates this time on booting up) and easier to remove some of the crud like Cortana/Privacy stuff properly it would actually be a significantly worthwhile update over 7.

EDIT: Oh and unifying the backend/settings a bit - even if it means hiding some options under "advanced options" would be nice.

^^ I probably broke the 1511 update myself getting impatient - but after ~6 hours sitting at 0% it was getting a bit ridiculous - after a fresh install (which replaced an only 2 days old install) it "only" took 2 hours to do the same bit.

EDIT: Actually its a massive joke in this day and age - even that tablet has a fairly capable CPU (Z8300), fast RAM and reasonable storage performance (the eMMC runs at ~180MB/s and access times, etc. equivalent to an SSD).

That would appear to be good news then.

But as I've repeatedly tried to point out... this is NOT the story that was being told around the time that Windows 10 was released. Many reputable sites were giving out conflicting information and a lot were even quoting Microsoft themselves!

As to having wasted £80... can't say that I'm going to loose much (any) sleep over it.

PS. I think you actually mean .ISO and not ios (isn't that a mobile OS developed by Apple;)).

PPS. But on reflection... taking the initial issue of Windows 7 and no native NVMe drivers into consideration, I consider my £80 well spent :)

A bit fed up of Microsoft uninstalling tools such as CCleaner every major update. It also changed my power settings and left behind a windows.old folder.

What happens when I don't have 20GB of free space on my SSD before each update?

The last BIG update to Windows 10 in November caused a lot of stuff to go "missing" (IE. the update uninstalled it without asking). It happened to loads of people. See (one of many articles about this):

http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2015-11/24/windows-10-update-removing-software

For me... it also re-set quite a few things in certain drivers back to their default settings (EG. Nvidia control panel, Realtek sound manager, Nahimic etc.). Wiping out all the customization that I had done in them! Pretty annoying to be honest.

PS. GOOGLE something like "Windows 10 update removes software" gives you a good idea of what's been happening. The internet, a powerful tool, if only people would use it for more than Social media
