Painful Tooth Ache!

This isn't a hospital thread or GO TO THE DENTIST, because I've already been.

Had over a week of intense pain due to a large tooth at the back that I think I may have damaged it eating something, but going to the dentist instead of taking it out, they've given me antibiotics to cure a root infection, which may have come in through the gumline or a small crack.

The problem is, they won't take it out until next bloody Thursday when the infection goes away. The pain at times is unbearable, how the hell did people deal with this many years ago, I have no idea :(

Any of you lot had this before and waited it out?

You have my fullest sympathy old boy!

I had a root canal infection some years ago, and yes, it is the most intense sustained agony I have ever experienced! (I am in my mid fifties!)

It isn't just the pain. It is because it is in your head, and there is absolutely nothing you can do to make it go away!!

(Do NOT do this at home children!)

If it was a bad leg or arm you could distance yourself from it and relax, but toothache is right up there in your head!!!!

My GP was right up there and understanding when he said, really quite apologetically, that they didn't keep opiates on the premises. I am sure he would have given me a jab if he could!

Eventually, after a massive dose of antibiotics, the infection subsided and I got the "Route Kanal" treatment (Which was also smelly and unpleasant)

You are right, How people coped with this sort of **** in the past!

They must have been hard as ****ing nails even to survive!!

Why are people saying antibiotics, they are not pain killers and take time to work.

He needs anti inflammatory like Ibuprofen and any chemical ending in caine will sort it. ;)

Why would the doctor give you a higher dose of antibiotics?
We prescribe the same when it comes to antibiotics.
A dentist is more likely to have an idea of which type of infection it is, and thus which antibiotic might help.

Neil, you had the pain for a week, when did you first attend the dentist? Was this today? A Friday? When did you start the antibiotics? When did you first feel the tooth break?

Obviously, I won't suggest the madness that this thread has already yielded, even by underbosses, as that would suggest it does become a medical thread, filled with advice which could lead to traumatic ulcers in your mouth or soft tissue burning.

the antibiotics should work nicely getting rid of the infection and do finish them. i've found cutting out sugery and starchy foods does seem to help me not get them, kinda? also read on interwebs that eating lots of garlic and blue cheese can give some natural antibiotics too.

+2 booze :)

Why do people actually think people survived?
Why do people even say this?
Often they didn't, they got a big swelling, it compromised their airway, or led to spreading infection, and they died. Life expectancy was about a third of what it is now, it wasn't all from death in childbirth. Throw a good infection at someone and they died.

Had a tooth infection in the summer. Absolute agony. Use Co-Codomol to help with the pain until I got to a dentist who gave me a weeks worth of anti-biotics and said come back in 10 days. (yeah, thanks for that, why can't you rip the ****er out?

They can't do much until the infection has gone as it might spread. I doubt you would want that.

lol Same :)

Co-Codomol is with me now, need a stronger dose though, 8mg is weak

Worst few days of pain in my life until the amoxicillan kicked in, I really feel for you :(
Like you, I had a long wait before the dentist would do anything about it. IIronically, it was the dentist who caused it in the first place by butchering a tooth to prepare it for a crown.

Caused me endless problems I eventually went to a private dentist and had it removed completely.

Ps - don't believe anyone who says whiskey will numb the pain.... It burns!

Pps - don't get any Mars bar on it, trust me. That caramel/nougat stuff makes itself at home and will instantly make you regret eating it lol.

I was doing some reading tonight and apparently they used certain stuff to rot the tooth out. That just me feel urg! Others used barbers

His pole, with pewter basins hung,

Black, rotten teeth in order strung,

Rang’d cups that in the window stood,

Lin’d with red rags, to look like blood,

Did well his threefold trade explain,

Who shav’d, drew teeth, and breath’d a vein.

I know tooth pain I really do, I loose a tooth every few years and it hurts like hell.

My teeth just fall out, I have lost one front one and 3 back ones naturally.

The relief when they do come out is amazing. I have this genetic thing and will lose all my teeth by the time am 60.

Lost 60% of gums in the top and 50% of the bottom. I have no back teeth at the bottom and my gums recede like a Ferrari. :(

I feel your pain OP. ;)

Yes I brush twice a day and don't eat sugar stuff, but tuff that's my disposition. :(

i'm beating you itchy :p 1997 all my wisdoms extracted under GA  all impacted and agony and then lots of morphene ahhhh :)

teeth are just rubbish, any excuse they can have to get a cavity they will, and then plot to kill you before you're 50.

did feel a bit guilty on my last visit to the injector-extractor when given the paper to fill in, "last visit to a denist" err 18 years doh  every time i go, extraction, wonder why i don't go...

i remember 33, i had pretty much perfect eyesight. think i was playing Morrowind :) awesome game! 12 years later, 45...near sight is going :(

I have a false teeth for 3 of my teeth, 2 at the front and left side and one at the right side.

I cannot eat with them in for the life of me. Makes me puke. :(

Its funny, you should see me trying popping them out discreetly in restaurants when the meal arrives and the strange cough I perform. :p

I hate my teeth they don't work as intended and I have ran out of warranty with GOD, so am up S creek without a paddle. :D

My teeth are naff! I brush twice a day too

However they haven't grown properly since childhood, instead of growing down, they grow to the sides at the back. Which means I've had wisdom teeth out and large molars out too, as they grow to the side scraping my inner cheek... ( infections, ulcers )

Front teeth are fine, but the back ones not so much :p

I think the worst pain I had was when I had a new tooth coming through, with an absess... It was barely a week out and the Dentist was cracking it, breaking it and pulled it out. Never seen so much blood from my mouth before either :p

that moment at the dentist when everything is numb, the pink panther scene with the pulling and the extraction, then the spurt of blood, just no. we've been there OP and we are with you.

max listerene, aaand boooze :)

Me teeth are, think Alien with the teeth coming out and stretching your skull.

I have a deformed jaw line and all my roots a crushed together. I look fine from the
outside but inside its gone west. Them 4 prong roots you have, mine are 4 mashed together to make 3 or 2.

Nan, Grandad, Mum have lost all the teeth. My brother is having trouble now at 30.
The dentist said it was hereditary, but I have a full head of hair and no bald spots. ;)

Swings and roundabouts so to say. :p
