Plus all the free stuff / payments they receive from companies, although they are trying to clamp down on that side of things. Think they have to tell you now if they've been sponsored in any way when doing a review.

They're not clamping down on free stuff, more so the payment side of things. If a youtuber received payment for doing a video or promotion (i.e. paid promotion), new changes in Youtubes policy mean that the youtuber in question has to make this clearly known to his/her audience.

I find TotalBiscuit does this in a perfectly fine and to the point manner. If I remember correctly any video of his that is paid for he states at the start of the video.

I say fair play, but when I look at the top channels most of them are simply just talking into the camera doing vlogs and still return 2-4 million viewers a video.

Pewdewpie I can't stand and most of his videos seem pointless.

Sure look at one of the UK's top you tuber one is called zoella and started off just doing makeup tips, now it mostly blogs.

I think if you are a good looking lad/gal and can talk **** you are landed.

Don't be fooled that it's easy mind you, I would say the amount of time coming up with ideas and editing etc is more than you think.

I look at it like lottery winners, although obviously youtube 'entrepreneurs' are not just relying on luck, they're working at it. Nevertheless, there has to be more than a huge pinch of luck to reap such massive rewards, considering so many others put in the same amount of effort.

Out of billions of people, there's always going to be that nano percentage of just a few lucky lottery winners who win the top prizes, and the same for a handful of lucky youtube people who get the big bucks out of millions of others that try.

Get that camera out and start promoting. :p

Lol, I think I'd need to be in my teens to early twenties again to stand even the remotest chance of earning anything.:p

Pewdiepie has done very well for himself, and he was even on some US panel show discussing what he does and why he does it. Personally, I think he is very strange...but fair play to him for getting to do what he loves, and get paid a crazy amount of money for it.

Interestingly, money was apparently never his goal, if you believe what he says here.

Might be true, might not be. But you often find in life, people that are incredibly successful where money genuinely wasn't their priority.
I think that's the key to success in many ways. Doing something because you want to, not for ulterior motives.

if you consider the audience figures then what they earn is relatively small

consider, for example, a TV show with similar numbers... I mean some TV shows will only have a few hundred thousand viewers and that still has to pay for large production costs, salaries of all the crew, producers, and the so called 'talent'.... a youtuber with a similar audience of a few hundred thousand views per video is going to earn a tiny amount in comparison as they're only able to really show a few seconds of adverts... yet they've managed to appeal to all those people

the liked of pewdiepie attracting millions per clip is very impressive - entire teams of professionals creating TV shows would kill for those viewer figures and one guy dicking around in his bedroom has achieved it with minimal expense - he might be annoying but fair play to the guy... ditto to that Zoella person from the youtube adverts.... she's made millions from giving advice on whatever she gives advice on (fashion and stuff?) to other girls and then has leveraged that into products/endorsements... is probably also a paid shill for the product placement people etc...

Why not, do people sigh when you want to be radio, weather or other presenter?
But like all of these careers you need a back up plan.

I imagine it'd be hard work but very rewarding if you can muster up a fan base, I don't think anyone should be put off by it.

Surely it's fantastic that we live in a time where people can become famous by sheer will, and not having to go through the usual pathways.

Sorry, I should have quantified that a bit.

He's a nice kid, but in this instance it's a case of: "Those guys make a lot of money playing computer games, so I can too. When do I get paid?"

This is unbelievable. Astonishing amounts of money these guys earn and the top one is some guy called pewdiepie who earns up to $6million a year, for being... an idiot. I mean ok, I watched two or three of his videos and some of it's quite funny, but seriously, for these pretty much talentless people to be earning such extraordinary amounts of money is mind blowing.

Me, jealous?? Of course! :p

Old news but if people enjoy watching them then that is their prerogative. I believe in equality and will always watch Twitch streamers or Youtube videos from those who have little exposure to help let their channel grow.

However I cannot stand the guy you linked with their fake acting or genuine over-hyped nature including **** for subs girl gamers. I think testosterone runs abnormally high in gamers hence why they probably like that kind of stuff.

As for the money aspect that is the result of people giving him exposure. Some people are just very lucrative and for them money = success. Guys like Syndicate used to leech the Treyarch forums and read the ways both a guy called Lee and I discovered Easter Eggs and he would palm the work of as his own. I think that **** is from Manchester also.

What these streamers do is nothing which cannot be achieved by those who are passionate gamers or good at a particular game. I'm always telling TonyTurbo or Nexus to Twitch stream but I guess Nexus is paranoid about his 12 year old Girly voice and TonyTurbo is just to damn lazy. They would make entertaining streams though :p

Edit and another streamer I know TheRaider would be successful too if he used a cam (for some reason people love that) but he explained to his viewers that being a teacher people would get the wrong impression of him because how he behaves, acts in game and would probably lose his job and cannot afford to do that with a wife, mortgage and cat to sustain lol

That was quite a good video, i see no reason why he would need to lie about it, I personally don't watch his videos but i do sub to quite a few Battlefield channels.

it's not a 5 minute job, you have to record, edit, voice over, work out the content so quite a bit of time is spent do this, and if you do it well, you become popular, and good on him for doing so.

the people hating, are just jealous idiots that have either never tried, or failed miserably at it.

I think it's amazing that people can make a living off content considered too niche for TV. I don't watch many YouTube videos but I'm a keen podcast listener. There's so much great, free (with ads) content out there at the moment.

Everyone tries to do it now days as its money for next to nothing.

So many Twitch celebs are just tarty little girls who dress like whores and jiggle about on camera for money. They are like a soft version of webcam porn.

2. Nobody is using adblock

Most people don't use adblock though because most people either aren't tech savvy or are just plain idiots.

Thats shocking, disgusting, shouldn't be allowed etc. Got any links? :p
