Double Bed Recommendations

A friend once told me two things need to be done right in life.
Need a good pair of shoes, and a decent bed.
And you know what? I agree.

So if I was looking to get a good reputable (if that exists) double bed that didn't cost a small fortune, where would I be looking?
My first thought is Ikea but feel like that may be the lazy mans road.

:D

John Ryan do some at the "cheaper" end of market but they're still probably better quality than any other in that price range. Unless you're going to sleep on one in the shop, lying down on one for 10 mins isn't really going to tell you much.

Another vote for John Ryan, my mattress from them is great :).

Try different mattresses and take your time. A decent mattress will be worth it, a great mattress will be better so you need to be prepared to spend a bit.

The frame isn't that important as long as it supports you and whatever you get up to.

Don't go to Ikea. They do beds in a odd size so bedding from other UK retailers won't fit.

I'd buy the matress and bed separately. Get a good, solid wooden bedframe from a local retailer and order a nice memory foam matress from Snug.

Also, do yourself a favour and upgrade to King Size.

They do standard sizing now too.

OP - as others have said go try a few out, find one you like and then browse online to see if it's cheaper. It's worth spending good money on a mattress - you spend a big chunk of your day laying on it. We got a Silent Night on a stupid offer from Argos - should have been around £1200 and I think we paid ~£400 after offers and cashback

I know it's not cheap... but I can't recommend my tempur enough! For the cost and the guarantee and the fact it'll probably be the last mattress you buy for a long, long time, I feel it's worth at least trying :) (they do a 60day trial money back thingy too)

It's not the bed frame that matters too much, it is the mattress.

This with the caveat it needs to be a solid bed frame, none of these £60 bed frames of ebay with 2mm thick slats.

Since someone posted it on here, always thought these were very nice looking beds for reasonable amounts. Mo idea what they are actually like or what the company is like.

For me a bed is one of those things that needs to be right, together with pillows. You spend 1/4 to 1/3 of your life in bed (3/4 if you are a lazy student....or enjoying the female students, student....either way I HATE YOU) and it needs to be right. It is also a subjective thing and more important as you age, as young bones deal with bad support better than old bones, hence why so many young people think the Ikea stuff is good (it's not, it's cheap, that's different).

Go lay on a few, some good manufacturers will also let you trial beds too which is kind of cool and you can also have something bespoke, which I have done as my wife likes a softer bed than I do so we have a double tension bed, which costs more but is ideal.

To a point but if, for example, you like a firmer bed and you buy one of those thin slatted ones then the mattress will sag.

I have always had a divan and due to needing winter clothes storage I opted for an Ottoman style which had the thin slats - I had to put sheets of ply under the mattress in order for our firm mattress to return to being firm! I bought a cheap Ottoman but the middle of the road ones would be fine and more solid construction (~£300-400).

Also I would personally go for nothing smaller than a Queen size but probably King if it fits in the room, plus get bedding for the next size up so you won't be wrestling with the covers.

Agree with advice above, try things out in the shop, only way to know. Also don't always disregard a good pocket-sprung mattress and opt for memory foam ones because the salesman tells you, there can be downsides to these newer kinds to do your research.

I bought a frame-style bed for my daughter recently and opted for a nice solid pine one with matching under storage bins and there is acres of storage. Definitely some clever ideas out there.
