Windows 10

New (2nd hand) laptop up and running I think.

But I don't get activation. The win8.1 which was in there wouldn't activate, win10 upgrade wouldn't work, and wouldn't accept any of my spare keys.

So got media creation tool, booted from USB, and it's activated from the bios stored serial. Which is same as the win8.1 which wouldn't activate.

However what does a yellow star mean, both graphics card and media storage have it next to them. It's not the exclamation and properties say they are working fine.

Maybe the previous owner had already upgraded to Win 10. Sure I read after a few days of Win 10 you can't go back to an earlier version and reuse your key, it's now tied to Win 10.

Don't think I've ever seen a gold star next to a device.

So win10 seems completely different this morning compared to yesterday...

The top bar seems very bold in its colour now and when I right click on the start menu it's a huge black list of things now rather than the normal whiteish/grey options box.

All my shared folders are not giving access without a username and password which I don't know so I can't use my fire stick now

What's happened?

Oh. Well it looks worse. Nevermind. I got my folder sharing working again though, just had to flick an option switch to not require passwords.

Just tried to upgrade my gaming PC to Win10. What an utter fail! Got stuck on the "We'll be ready soon" screen for about 2hrs. So I just rebooted my machine.

After this, while it did boot into Windows, my mouse was not working, my keyboard worked to an extent. I could hit the Start button on my keyboard and it would bring the menu up. But it only did this once. Not all the apps started properly.

In the end, I gave up and put it back to Win 7 which didn't take long at all. Think I will stay with Win 7 for a very long time and will do a fresh install of Win 10 when I can purchase a key that isn't around £80 or so. I have downloaded the Win10 from the Microsoft website onto a USB stick. So when I feel the time is right, then I will upgrade.

A lot of the issue seem to come from the upgrade.

I fresh installed windows 10 originally then fresh installed the fall upgrade and have had no problems.

Use the media creation tool and give it another shot :) I guarantee you will have better results.

I used the MCT to put Win10 on the USB stick. But I read that I cannot use my Win7 key if I go down the fresh install route. Or is that incorrect? If it's not then I would happily go down that route as I know I can install all the drivers and such myself.

As in if you are lucky you'll only have to wait 2 hours the second time around instead of 6+ hours :S

I have no idea how so many people just accept Windows 10 as acceptable - the general glitches (my brother just found a fairly big one with regard to display language/input device that seriously makes their programmers look incompetent - do they not do any QC testing any more?) and long update times, etc. make Windows XP look state of the art in comparison.

I've installed this on 32 pc's over the past couple of months and the only issue I had was on my own build when updating the BIOS, it deactivated.other than trying to reach the right MS person to give me a key so I could re-authenticate, its been trouble free.

It's more than acceptable and a very good OS.
