Investment Bankers / Brokers

They kind of are doctors to be fair :p

by 'doctors' I'm using the term colloquially to refer to the medical profession

and aside from maxillofacial surgeons dentists aren't 'doctors'

still they both work in healthcare just as traders and investment bankers both work in finance...

They have a huge medical knowledge of the whole body (although nobody can know everything - you wouldn't ask a barrister to negotiate a contract for you), drugs and diseases. And they do have the title doctor! I think I'm a little defensive as my brother is a dentist and it's a common misconception they have a comparatively less substantial knowledge base... How on earth could they carry out major surgery every day, if they didn't.

Ultimately though, yea, different jobs! :p so what a pointless post \o/

Overclockers UK Forums > Life > General Discussion > Anyone in IB? > DENTISTS ARE FRAUDULENT LOSERS AND CANT EVEN DOCTOR PROPERLY BECAUSE MY OPINION AnD RARRRGHHHG

Welp.

Fairly recent graduate (less than 2 years). Got really really lucky (didn't realise it at the time) in my first placement.

Technically my contract states 37 with any hours extra supported. Its not 37hrs....

Strangely though I don't actually mind. Its an interesting job with decent prospects.

I, for one, blame the OP for the financial crisis.

Risk is a pretty big business at the moment. Its certainly not a laissez faire environment. In fact its so punitive (through regulation) that lots of places are actually having to build up revenues through cost savings, as its easier to reduce costs.

no one commented on their depth of knowledge... it was merely an aside - different jobs, there was nothing for you to be defensive about even... but I guess this is GD :p

Surgeons definitely aren't doctors. Actually, doctors aren't really doctors either. I mean, where's their PhD???

kind of missing the point - by 'doctors' I was referring to the medical profession as I've already stated in the bit of my post you've ignored there

I'm well aware that most 'doctors' (in the UK at least) don't have actual doctorates and neither do most dentists... but both can and do use the title 'Dr' as a courtesy title... as can chiropractors even

are you unaware however that the general public refers to people in the medical profession colloquially as 'doctors' ergo when someone talks about doctors and dentists they're not referring to PhDs...

I don't understand some of the comments here, what is wrong with what I asked? Investment Banking constists of sales, trading and structuring activities. If it isn't classed as an IB Activity, then I am unsure as to what else you would consider it.

Purpose of my post was to see people who did have some background so I could ask them more about it - for sure, it's better to meet people who have similar interests (tech in this case) because it's not the usual "alpha" douche who sits at his desk, boasts about his book and PnL and how he has more money than sense.

OP:
New to the industry and fresh out of my 4 year partying course, looking to meet friends and colleagues so that i may get a leg up and eventually have their job ;)

Exactly that.

I do in FO

What do you do in FO? Sales / structuring / Trading?

What sort of stuff do you do? Sales, trading, structuring, etc?
Well, I am intern/placement for 1 year, sales + structuring. I get to help the sales and also learn about product from the structurers. Primarily cross asset derivatives, the creation + issuance + sales process. I am involved in all 3 processes (so I get a good picture of how it all comes along).

Yeh, we waiver the rights to complain about being asked to work more than our contract hours. I think mine is like 45 hours a week, in reality I do like 90.

Overall, my experience is coming up to 1 year. I have learnt a lot about this indsutry. I want to follow a future in Sales and eventually gather enough knowledge to possibly move over to the buy side. Who knows, without some one actually knowing my background it's hard to get advice on such things. However, I quickly realised one thing - if you never try you, you will never know.

Investment Banking constists of sales, trading adn structuring activities. If it isnt classed as an IB Activities then I am unsure as to what else you would consider it.

Sales and trading isn't investment banking and you'll find those roles within commercial banks like RBS, HSBC etc.. too. You could be trading FX options for example... it has nothing to do with investment banking.

Investment banking is concerned with raising capital through issuing new securities, advising on mergers and acquisitions etc..

IB = Corporate Finance, Transaction Banking, Wealth Management etc (mainly originators/sales)
Markets/Securities = Debt, Equities etc (mainly trading/sales)

But people use IB to mean all of the above anyway.

Unless you are a high value trader I am seeing a real transition of IB related jobs to other countries at the moment (ie offshored to India). Even the high value trading roles are under threat from much faster computers nowadays. I think the glory days of IB are certainly on the decline in this country.
