Windows 10

One of my Win 10 installs seems to be very slow on start up - blue window at top, spinning dots at bottom - lasts 10 or more seconds - initially used to be very fast start up. I have disable all "high" impact start up progs - to no avail - it's a bit annoying!

Any ideas? Two other win 10 installs OK.

Internet I would guess.

Pretty dangerous if they are being streamed from somewhere online even if its from MS's servers... someone sometime is going to be unable to resist the urge to put something inappropriate on there.

Though I'd assume with windows update, etc. MS has fairly rigorous procedures.

Not sure why that's dangerous, no different to anything else being downloaded from an MS server e.g. weather updates.

Right so my Win7 Pro install which was upgraded to from Vista Pro, which was upgraded to from XP Pro was upgraded to 10 Pro today. I finally decided it was time having ran it on my work PC for a while now and mostly being satisfied and actually liking some of the new features.

One thing I didn't anticipate was the faff I'd be going through in the middle of the night to get certain aspects back to my liking to stop me from being annoyed.

- Local security policy needed administrator level privilege being disabled in order for software in the start menu Startup folder to load at logon.
- Classic Shell (a given...).
- Regedit in the token policy Qword value to enable the default $ shares to be accessible again so I can browse my drives properly from my phone now without being "denied" access.

With that all sorted, I can get on with life and not see that sodding Windows 10 upgrade window pop up at each reboot.

My previous Windows install dated back from 2009. It never needed a clean install, it was maintained to a level that made it perform and look like a clean install year round. I'm hoping Windows 10 retains this kind of efficiency and that further Windows updates don't muck around with my preferences.

Edit*
Ergh, after encountering a side-effect of the workarounds above, I've rolled back to 7. MS can take their finely secured OS, and shove it up their butt.

^^ hah yeah - its seriously poorly thought out on a tablet... trying to shutdown on low battery without being near my charger...

"Windows is configuring updates... do not turn off your PC"

Which went on for about 20 minutes until the battery died...

Lack of ability to take properly manual control over Windows updates is utter ******* muppetry.

This is why I haven't updated the desktops. Cannot stand it. Updating whatever it feels like even if Microsoft released a shoddy not fully tested update then pulls it and this has happened so many times lately.

There should be something that allows you to set windows update to only install/download when connected to a power outlet.

I have a 2 in 1 and don't really want windows update installing on shutdown when I'm using just the tablet, Battery power is sacred..:D

You guys wanna know the worst part of all this? I spent some time going through all the Metro/tile apps and uninstalling them. I then set about going through customising other things and when I got back to the start menu, those apps I uninstalled were neatly back and reinstalled! Store had redownloaded all those apps again.

The nerve.

I'm now back on Windows 7, thankfully the rollback worked great, no issues. It's as swift as ever and it feels good to be back in total control.

If I remember though there is a way to not auto download apps from the store, just like android (play store), a setting in the store settings I think...

That would be special casing as a solution though - ultimately the OS can't know the user's circumstances so forcing updates is going to cause issues even with some options to defer them.

The device in question is a Toshiba Click 10 - I won't be buying another Windows 10 tablet device unless they make some big changes that is for certain - funny as I dislike Windows 8 as well but its a lot less irritating as a tablet experience.

Oooof need to make sure I select that as I just put a load of time into removing gunk and setting up stuff as I like it, would have made an already irritating experience even worse.

Windows 10 working very nicely for me, smoother/faster, not just in normal usage but in gaming too.

Had to disable pretty much everything and have also ran spybot anti-beacon.

Not had any issues with browsing my drives/folders on my android tablet and phone, can transfer files etc. just fine, I do it via the homegroup method.

Only thing I don't like is the automatic updates.
