Gtx 970 or R9 390x

I think the MSI one is at 1100mhz
Vr will be of interest to, I think the 970 meets oculus recommended spec, but elite dangerous given reqs for vr seem mental

If you are planning on playing ED and using windows 10, be careful if you do go AMD, as there is a big bug that needs sorting with Supercruise and sitting at single fps. Also I am currently playing ED on Nvidia and OMG, what an experience and runs superbly well :)

I would make a separate thread with this info. That's not right, not by a long way, you have somesort of problem here.

Just changed the thermal paste for IC diamond, MSI had Caked it in paste now gettng 71c in tomb raider. 23c lower temps :O will make a thread for it :)

390 :) PCS+ is a beast of a card and a great cooler;

Sapphire; and MSI - problem is with the MSI it tends to sit higher on price scale.....

I got 290 PCS+ and seriously beast; at max 72 Degrees running BF4 vsr 1440p :D

Had a similar choice to make recently - managed to get the MSI 390X for £299 which which was a no brainer vs a £279 970

Well I just got through modding my zalman Z11… it'll accept cards up to 330mm now and could expand the space further if need be.
Am gonna be ordering in the next 48hours. Looks like it'll be a 390… I wanted physx support but I can't get over 8gb vram. Just working out if I want to pay the extra to get an X on the end of the badge or not lol

I've had a look around and think I've got a good idea but, anyone got any power consumption comments with regard to 390 vs 390x? As I can tell the fps average only jumps a tiny bit between the vanilla and the X, but the power difference is worth looking at

Ooohhh **** it.
Only just seen this and it may have thrown a spanner in the works.

I'd been playing on my laptop (i5 5200u geforce 840m) and in the last week an old old PC (athlon 640 and radeon 6870) both fine (720p though) so never even considered there might be issue

Balls. Back to gtx 970 consideration then

You can't seriously let that one "potential" bug that may or may not happen in ONE game pushes you toward getting a inferiour card? I mean there are issues with Nvidia cards in other aspects, but just because we don't go into details doesn't mean they are not there (such as the stuttering issue that's been brought up quite frequently lately...though it is suspected to be driver related).

Hardware wise the 390 is better than the 970 (high-end design vs pimp-up mid-range), and the 970 is really only good for 1920 res, and that higher res than that you'd have to start lower texture and AA level to keep the vram usage below 3.5GB to avoid possible issues). Whilst the 970 can still keep up with the 390 in dx11 or older titles, the same may not remain true when dx12 become mainstream. The 970 is only a better choice when people want a lower temp card for smaller PC build, or if they play lots of GameWorks title (where AMD cards performance will usually get hammered).

ED is just like... My main game right now lol
The only game works thing that comes to mind is witcher 3 but , from what I can tell the 970 won't handle everything turned up anyway

I'll jump in here. We hope to have a fix for Elite Dangerous soon, so i wouldn't base a purchase decision on this bug as it's going to be resolved.

The temporary workaround to the issue is to place the following four DLL files into the Elite Dangerous game folder and the problem is solved.

Elite Dangerous Supercruise Mode:

Try placing the 15.6 DLL files in the Elite Dangerous folder, this should resolve the issue and allow you to keep using the Crimson drivers in other games. Additionally, you can try installing Catalyst 15.6 driver which does not have the issue.

I don't have Elite, but in the example below i placed the DLL's in the GTA V directory.

What's the feeling toward the XFX "dd black edition" r9 390x ???
Did a bit of googling and it seems the cooler is decent and quiet enough? But I've never had any hardware from XFX (always had asus, sapphire and I think I had powercolor before)

Only giving that card a look because it fits in with my black stealth build thing

If going for the 390/390x I'd look at the Sapphire If i'm honest. The cooling on my 390 sapphire is just absolutely spot on. Sitting at 35 degrees idle and the machine has been on over 10hours. Usually sits under 30 but it's pretty warm in my room at the moment. In gaming sits between 50-60 Been completely silent so far. :)

I just got the Asus strix 390x and I love it. After an initial panic over temps I installed MSI afterburner and now it's runs at sub 40 idle and sub 70 in game. It's an amazing card, looks nice and lovely backplate. I've already done a very quick hertz only OC by 400Mhz and she is still stable without touching voltage. I'm getting well over GTX980 performance now out of a £300 card.. Wtf... Amazing. Bang for buck it surely doesn't get better.

Ordered the Sapphire Nitro r9 390 w/backplate)
Couldn't justify the extra £100 odd for the X given its relatively negligible performance boost

Also, chopping my z11 was a waste of an evening, brought a new case too that'll support the card by default lol

Enjoy!!:D

Which case did you go for? - Decent/good airflow?

Similar performance, but again, 4GB vs 8GB and the 980 is £60 more

+1 - only a fool would pay £60 more for a card with less than half the VRAM of the cheaper card.

The 390/390X are the absolute sweet spot in terms of performance per £ - nothing else compares.

They are also very well equipped to deal with the DX12 future - having full hardware asynchronous compute.
