Anyone recommend some decent hiking/walking boots?

Ignore everyone. Go to a shop and try on as many as you can get the ones that fit best and offer what you want. Try them on with nice thick socks, i usually wear a liner sock and a pair of those thick heat socks, there very soft inside and allow the liner to move around never had a blister with that combo even on 50+ mile walks.

Agree with the above, both points. Feet are very different person to person, I've been in many shops and tried many boots to find a replacement for my old berghaus but they are either not wide enough (most manufacturers) or the arch is too high (Salomon for me).

Personally I avoid Vibram soles as I find then extremely slippery in the wet on smooth hard surfaces like welsh slate, great in the dry but can't trust them in the wet.

I have Berghaus Explorer GTX.

I'd echo the above; try some on and go for the best fitting goretex boot from a reputable make and you won't go far wrong :)

I'd highly recommend using the silly ramp thing to try them out in the shop, particularly the downhill bit, to make sure your feet don't slide forward and they don't rub.

No matter how good the boot, if it doesn't fit it'll be useless to you.

I usually go for vibram as ive never had issues in the wet, maybe it's a tread pattern thing? but the Scarpa R-Evo GTX's i have have vibram and are the best boots ive ever worn, i do a lot of wild camping so all conditions apply.

Depends on tread pattern a lot - one lot of my Merrells had great grip at the front but if I made contact with the heel first onto something wet I'd go flying though they improved with use while another pair grip fine in all but the most extreme ice.

Overall I rate my Merrells as they are by far the most comfortable of anything I've worn and reasonably durable but they could definitely pay more attention to grip.

Alt Berg

Best money you will ever spend on boots.

I have had Altberg duty boots for years which are great, however, I ended up buying Scarpa ones for hiking due to the fit which I highly recommend: http://www.scarpa.co.uk/trek/ranger-2-gtx-activ/

If you're close to the Altberg factory you can get them made to measure.

Also, socks are really important too, make sure you have good quality, thick socks.

Altberg tend to be £150 and up but there are plenty of used or new military models from ex servicemen on Ebay, some go as low as half the price. Was never sure on their sizing as nowhere to try around here though plus never had the need for a full leather waterproof kind of boot as my feet get hot very quickly. Still seen a few in flesh while hiking and quality does look top notch.

If I'm hiking in the summer, for reasons above I just tend to use my trail running Asics as they are feather light and highly breathable.

Meindl for hiking.

For general use and a bit of walking try British army wet weather boots, cheap on eBay! Made by lowa.

Switched from boots to hiking shoes a while back and not looked back. For me the reduction in weight makes hiking/scrambling much more enjoyable. Not noticed any issues with the perceived loss of ankle support.
Pretty much this. You'll get further/faster.

I love my Salomons, as comfy as my trainers
http://www.salomon.com/uk/product/quest-4d-2-gtx.html

RRP is quite a bit more than your budget but most retail around 94-99 quid

edit

looks like with version 2 being released its version 1 that is being discounted..this is the version I have and they are superb

I've had this pair of Salomon's for 6 months. They are very comfortable from the start. But, they leak in persistent wet conditions, take an absolute age to dry once wet and the rubber at the foot fold is prying away.

Quite disappointed given I enquired about these specific issues prior to purchase and was reassured all would be fine. Now have to make a special journey to return!
