High Court: Homeowners can use 'disproportionate force' against burglars

One point some may be missing here, if you hurt, disable or on the extreme case end someone's life, whats to stop their families/mates coming back. If you are a single man with no ties, meh whatever, but if you have a wife and children, how safe would you then feel?

Another reason to keep action as appropriate as possible while minimising risk to yourself.

TBF i don't think risking the wrath of a related psycho to the robber is in the top 5 arguments against using grossly disproportionate force against and the sort of people playing macho robber hunter will likely be deluded into feeling they are safe as houses due to the firearm they lovingly keep under the bed, next to the kid's Christmas prezzies.

What about painting my stairs with thick tar, deliberately leaving Christmas tree decorations on the floor next to an open window or constructing a rudimentary flame thrower out of a lighter and aerosol can tied to a door with string?

If I shot one they must know I'm going to shoot the next one that comes along. Don't misinterpret, shooting someone is the last resort, but if someone enters my home with the intention of robbing/hurting me or my family, they won't be walking out without at least a few rounds of my 5.56 ammo through them.

Your post makes it sound like we should let them do as they please because their family/friends will come after you.

Sounds about right for this country, where men have been systematically emasculated and pandering to criminals is the default tactics for tackling crime

We dont all own firearms matey. Id dare say its a lot more gritty having to kill someone while being in physical contact with them rather than from metres away.

rather live in a country full of systematically emasculated men than some of the other sorts around here :p

Sounds much safer even with the criminals thrown into the mix.

I am finding some of these hero posts hilarious. Does bragging over the internet about how you would shoot a 'bad guy' to make an example to the other 'bad guys' like a group of primary school boys pass for masculinity these days?

I rate this as masculine as people screaming 'get rekt' and 'kys' to strangers while playing video games.

Oh I get that, but you'd do everything you could to stop this intruder harming your family, with whatever you have at your disposal, no?

You know 99.99999999% of burglars just want your TV or Playstation, I'm not sure these guys that are supposedly out to kill all your family are as prevalent as the paranoid "gun under the bed" types think.

Yes, i would just rather not buy stuff to keep at my disposal that also puts my family at risk outside of being robbed. I wasn't making fun of the use of guns in self defence, some people feel the need to have them (although i don't, other people can do what they want) but rather the showy attitude in many of these posts.

If i was getting robbed and the guy was too dangerous to take on with anything short of a gun, then i would rather try and get my family to safety and take a hit on my house insurance premiums next time a renew it.

Hell, i would rather pay the premiums over going through the court cases and everything that follows. probably would work out cheaper once you take into account hours missed at work.

Robbers just want to rob you. If they broke in and decided to kill you over rob you for one reason or another, then they are mentally unstable murderers that are in the middle of committing a robbery. In this case, then of course its fine to kill when its kill or be killed but that isn't the topic of the thread :)

Ive thought about this on several occasions, I have a cree torch in my bedroom, its not overly big but does have the "window breaker" bevelled edge on the led end. That might help (and Im 6'1" 19st odds).
Looking around the hallway and top landing though, I cant see a single thing that I could use to defend myself other than if I had a pair of boots on. Perhaps I am not inventive enough but given most burglary's are creeper types, how much notice do you get before you can arm yourself. I can only imagine the panic you'd have if they woke you with a pot of boiling water/acid etc. No amount of ammo will help you there neither.

Luckily I have two very yappy cocker spaniels who would give the game away very early.

Tell that to this bloke :(

so tell me, realistically how many of these robberies in England have a violent result to them?

All your example shows is that there are some psychos that are burglars. Shooting every one to make an example does not justify anything.

There was a guy stabbed at a local club a few years back during a punch up. Does that mean that if i get into a scrap there in the future i should aim to kill just in case?

Cause y'know, reasons.
