This. A seat bolted to two RR Avons which could get from ground to altitude faster than just about anything of the time.

I'll hazard a guess the Lightning could still hold its own in that department against modern jets. It's rate of climb was sensational.

Quick google suggests that the Germans were using older Typhoons that didn't have it. Meh - boring.

I've been around a few forums recently - plugging my little black plastic bricks (ebay lego sr71) etc etc .......

and it certainly seems to be the case that there is a lot of love out there for this plane. - same as concorde..... almost a feeling like.... that was as good as mankind is ever going to get......

Exactly, the vertical take off unless you have a full length airport runway with crew to mop up the jet fuel that leaks from sr-71. I can go shopping (of course I would take the shopping angle
